Looks like you found #3 rod bearings that made their way outside of their normal habitat.

You’ll know soon enough! But cylinder walls are steel sleeves, and this doesn’t look like steel

Stalled out. I had a 14mm triple Square for the headbolts, and they’re actually a 10mm double hex, which is being delivered tomorrow. So I’ll tear down more this week and hopefully completed tear down by the end of next weekend.

 

I think I found a nail in the coffin for the ole motor. 3 and 4 piston walls are scored. #4 I can’t really feel with my finger, but my finger nail can feel the scoring. #3 I can feel how bad it is with my finger alone. The crank 3 and 4 is scored and the rod bearings are toast. Also looks like the thrust bearings took a hit as well. I personally think it was oil starvation, but really I don’t think I can find that out. If it was just the crank, I’d get a new one and move forward with rebuild, but since the cylinder walls are scored, I don’t think I can hone that out. 3rd pic is of a good cylinder for example.

 

I gotta say, the difference between using the 14mm triple square and the 10mm double hex is huge. Triple square has a huge amount of movement compared to double hex does not move

used 4.0 for $1650 delivered is well within my budget. I’ll do a light tear down and reseal on it. Mainly reseal the timing cover and replace rear main, then drop it in the Taco and be done.

 

So you are saying, that you think oil starvation is the root of the cylinder wall scoring, and the knocking? Do you remember a time when your truck was sitting non-level for an extended period in a situation where oil starvation could have gotten its roots? Nice pics by the way, you're definitely skilled at engine teardown!!

 

it’s a possibility that I could have been at an awkward angle over the past 13.5yrs of this motors life, I do wheel it hard. The bearings are what caused the cylinder scoring for sure.

 

Yikes. Those rod-cap bearings look trashed.

Does Toyota publish any specs or recommendations for the max range of engine roll and pitch angle while running?

 

I don’t know. I do remember at Jambo my buddy in an FJC was at an angle that he was teetering on the verge of rolling and his engine started knocking some so he shut it off.

Update on the replacement motor. I’m going to have to hold off on that purchase because my roof decided to exit the chat after last weeks wind.
