Wow. I feel kind of bad.

    I forgot about him.
But I didn't talk with him much.

I did notice Just_a_Guy was MIA for a bit.
But then he came back and said he moved.
But I did notice you were gone.

Yes but it probably would have at that age/mileage regardless. It ain't stupid shit that never breaks you're getting hit with.

The way he went at me once, I won't mind.

IDK if they still have but I have Yokohama Avid Ascents on mine, good if you drive a lot.

Click and Clack (the Tappet Brothers) always said from a purely financial standpoint it almost never pays to get another vehicle. As long as the frame/floors are solid it's always cheaper to keep what you have.

Buy a vehicle (ideally new or damn near new).

Keep it at least 10 years.

Even if it hits you hard one year, it costs about $600-$1000 a year average to keep it running. I'd adjust those numbers for the times and say $1200-1500. You ain't buying anything on that money for another vehicle though. Even if it hits you hard one year (as mine did this year, $4k) it will average out to about those numbers.

I hate TV. And I only have a few "good" friends.
I tend to keep my circle small.

TW is my "Social Hangout Spot"

Easier to keep track of 4 quarters versus 100 pennies. I also have few good friends and that's dwindled recently, though in part due to people passing away.

So, my truck has another minor issue, likely due to age and mileage. This only happens the truck has been sitting for several hours, generally overnight. When I start the truck in the morning, the oil pressure light will stay steadily illuminated for a couple seconds longer than I would like. It then blinks as if oil is being pumped, and then it goes out. This only lasts a few seconds. Throughout the day as I'm driving around, the truck never does this on startup because the engine is warmed up.

My truck runs fine, doesn't run hot or overheat, and makes no weird noises. While talking to my mechanic this morning, I brought this up. This isn't Pete, but another mechanic named Joe who works for him and knows damn near everything about Toyotas.

He said it sounds like the truck is low on oil. My truck does not leak oil, and there is no oil in the coolant reservoir since the head gasket was replaced. My truck is most certainly burning minuscule amounts of oil due to age and mileage, but that's to be expected.

Joe gave me a rag and told me to go outside and check the oil. After a few checks of the dipstick, it was coming out clean! I naturally freaked out...

I say again that the truck runs absolutely fine and the oil pressure light is only on for a few seconds in the morning. If my engine had no oil in it whatsoever, it would probably only run for a few minutes before being destroyed. I believe that part of the reason the dipstick is coming out clean is because the truck is not parked on a 100% flat surface.

I have been running Mobil 1 full synthetic since like 85K, and this would likely give me more protection than conventional oil in case of a major failure that starved the engine oil. Joe told me to add a quart and see what happens, so once my mom is done running errands with her car, I'm gonna drive back up to the mechanic with a jug of oil.

Probably burning some oil, valve stem seals get hard and you lose a good bit out the pipe like that without hardly noticing.

I still don't get why the dipstick is coming up clean though. If it was accurate, I'd surely have a seized engine...

Nah, if the dipstick is coming up clean you're at least short a quart, being one quart low wont kill an engine, hell being 2 won't. It isn't good since you have less cooling capacity and capacity to suspend debris in but it won't starve it. My corolla takes 4.4q total and I've had to add 2.7q before haha and it showed no signs of loss of oil pressure.

It's an old truck, just keep a better eye on your oil level now.

By the time engine reaches the point of not being economically feasible to repair, I should probably have enough money to put a used engine from a wrecked truck in there; I refuse to buy a new or even slightly used Tacoma at today's prices! Even if I somehow get to the point of being able to pay cash for a vehicle before I turn 50, the prices are obscene. The cheapest 2024 Tacoma is thirty grand! A base model 4x4 with the options I want is almost forty grand! Plus, it'll probably cost about a thousand dollars to get the stereo where I want it! :headbang:

I'm sure a mechanic would be happy to do valve stem seals and a valve shim adjustment on your 2TR if they are bad. Those engines are easy peasy to work on

I don't know yet. My mom needed her Nissan to run and errand; I took a nap and now I'm gonna drive back up to Pete's to put a quart of oil in the truck...

So the engine doesn't have to be partially disassembled like with the head gasket job?

It's due for an oil change in just over a thousand miles, so I'll monitor oil consumption after that and if it gets really bad I will probably have those replaced.
