No problem. I'd definitely get a friend to help you, as a lot of the press work is easier with 3-4 hands. If you just follow the Timmy the Toolman video on it to a T, you should be good. I did my 3rd Gen 4runner a couple months after my Tacoma and my friend who helped with the Tacoma, helped with that one too. We got the 4runner done in 4 hours with new brake drums, shoes and hardware all too.

But its definitely something you just want to set aside your whole day for. And I'd review the Timmy video prior to, and ensure you have all the necessary parts and tools, so nothing holds you up with your rear end disassembled. If you end up running into any snags or have any questions feel free to post them here, and I'll try my best to help.

I also recommend changing the rear axle bearings and seals. My truck had the same issue, just did the rear bearings and seals no more clunk/knock. Trucks rear end feels much more solid after install as well. 2003 extra cab 213k miles.

    Thank you @Red_03Taco and @bjd129.

I tackled the job between Christmas and New Year and can say that this problem is solved. Took about 5 hours total time. Glad i bought the press tool as it made the job super easy with my hydraulic press. The kits i got worked great and while i replaced the tone rings i did not have to. The old ones came off easy with the right tools. Overall pretty easy job if you have the tools. If you don't then i could see this being a real pain. Anyways...

Congratulations . I love that feeling of diagnosing and repairing something that may have initially had you stumped. Hopefully this thread helps others diagnose this issue too, as darn near every 1st gen's wheel bearings should be approaching the end of their useful lifespan by now. And many, myself included don't correlate clunky rear ends with wheel bearings.

I already owned the press. Had to buy the puller tool. Still. His videos are so valuable.

    Is he on TW?

He was. Got banned. It's a long story, I don't know all the details. There is a thread somewhere.

He is what allows a garage hack like me tackle these jobs with some measure of confidence in completing it.

Easier to ban 1 Timmy than hundreds of idiot nut-swingers

(that bring this site traffic and sponsor sales)

    TLDR; Admin support plagiarism.
And nobody will stand up for him, cause y'all are snowflakes.
