    My redline is 7250 :benchpress:

I haven’t gone over 6500 though, that’s more than enough.

Just need to understand, the rev limiter will work on upshifts but, will not work on downshifts. Yes, you can over rev engines. Ski

top end. Cam lobes look fine, don't see any galling or some such. Some black deposits on the right end of the cams.

zoomed in on cam chain area.

Still have a question mark about a ~50K donor motor, wouldn't have any idea what it's history would have been, maybe the guy who wrecked the donor hammered it daily?

Does anyone have a high mileage 3.5 Taco motor, how long should they last?

Also wonder about parts availability from Toyota.

    Maybe.
In reality though, how many 3rd gen Tacoma owners really dog their truck?
1 in 500? 1 in 1,000? It can't be many, the vehicle just doesn't fit the profile.

I realize we have one of the few Tacos that actually drove across dirt every week. Sales guy didn't even know you could disable ABS on steep downhills, or why anyone would do that. We've done it plenty. These things are actually pretty good off-road, not like the Land Cruiser, that's next level, but pretty good really.

This guy had 318k miles on his '18 Taco 10 months ago. He works it hard with a lot of pulling. Pretty encouraging video.

Okay, here is the valve cover, there's some sludge under there:

    valvecover.jpg
Here's the timing chain cover, we're trying to pull off the harmonic balancer, and it's reeeeeeeally stuck on there, had to build a tool using a piece of angle bolted where the ring gear is to hold it from spinning.

    frontcoveroutside.jpg
Soon we'll be able to take a look at the oil pump and then pull the crank. I see the engines you can get with 50K miles are about $5-7K! Yikes.

A mechanic friend suggested I pull the heads since a rod knocking would apply extra pressure and heat potentially to that cylinder, we'll see how it goes. I think basically at that point it's kind of a total rebuild, but thus far I haven't seen anything that suggested bad wear, we'll see when it comes apart further.

Thanks for posting these pics. As far as the valve covers are concerned, the drapes don't match the carpets here with respect to the synthetic oil change intervals you specified in the posts. It's not as bad as I would expect, but it should be cleaner if they really poured in a quality full-synthetic oil every 5,000 miles unless you were beating it under continuous severe use. (ie: Cop car or taxi) But something is wrong: the facts you documented as far as oil changes (note: I believe you!) aren't in synch with the pics.

It would be interesting to see a picture of the PCV, as for me the condition of that simple part is a window into the actual beating heart of the engine. It lives a miserable life. It never looks perfect, but if it's "not bad" it tells you everything about the oil change intervals, even at 115,000 miles like mine when I changed it: documented 5,000 oil and filter changes (and types: about 50/50 synthetic and conventional with OEM filters. YMMV

I heard today a friend say he found out some oil change places don't do the oil filter unless you specify it specifically, yikes! Hope that wasn't the case, you'd think Toyota wouldn't do that, pricier than a Jiffy Lube or some such. Still discovering stuff.

Mostly my goal is to provide pictures of the process and help the next person who dives into this to know what they're getting into. We'll get it running somehow.

I don't think the 5k oil change interval was used on the truck in question here.

Ask one of the dealer techs or lube guys specifically for some of their bulk oil then do an oil analysis on it. Curious what they're actually using. So far it appears the cause of failure is inadequate oil quality

I’ve dogged mine. Just hit 85439 miles. Bought December of 22 with 13 miles. No issues no problems. And I’m at the southernmost point of South America. I haven’t driven in D for almost 79k miles. Anything less than 75 I’m in 5th. This engine was made to rev. So start the count with me. I’d say @bigoldbeef is another.

The funny part is not wanting an engine because it may have been dogged. I’d much rather one that was driven hard every single day of its life than one that never was.

Exactly. Go ahead a buy one that was babied for 50k and then try to make it work hard like a truck. See how long that works.
