Howdy, I’m stuck on some vibrations my truck has when driving highway speeds and on execration she’s a 2000 taco manual tranny 3.4L. I’ve balanced the wheels and tires, checked my ball joints and tie rod ends (no play) replaced the unjoints plus carrier on my driveline, and had it balanced at a driveline shop. The engine however seems to vibrate when reved to 3000 rpm similar to the vibrations I’m feeling, ran it at 3000 rpm in neutral, and pushed the clutch in and had no change in the vibrations. Anyone have any ideas?

Are the wheels/rims stock or aftermarket?

There is a guy here on Tacoma World who went crazy trying to solve his vibration issues and in the end he put a rear trans mount from O’Reillys on it and that solved his problem.

Interesting, I work at a Toyotas only shop and we may have a tranny mount I can try, thank you for the info!

Where do you feel the vibrations the most? In the steering wheel or in the seat?

    Is your truck lifted?

My truck is not lifted, it is completely stock, I feel it the most in the floorboards seats and shifters. The shifters vibrate similarly when I’m in neutral and the engine is running at 3000 rpm or higher

Generally, front end vibs from suspension components and tires will be felt in the steering wheel and pedals. Conversely, rear suspension and driveline vibs will be felt most in the seats and rear floor boards. I realize you checked the wheel balance but you might try moving the rear 2 tires to the front and the fronts to the back to see if the vibs change where you feel them.

First thing I tried, I’m looking for unusual fixes or tricks at this point… it’s most likely the throw-out bearing or warped flywheel/clutchpack, but I’m not sure. Before I do more diag work I wanted to see if anyone had any fixes. But thanks anyway

Would bad motor mounts/ bad cab mounts cause vibration like this? Mine are cracked

I went around in circles trying to solve a highway speed vibration. Even got a new drive shaft. Ultimately it ended up being out of round brake drums. I had them turned when I serviced the rear axle- new bearings, seals, brakes (new OEM wheel cylinders and shoes), but didn't spring for new drums. I set the rear axle on some jack stands, and rotated each tire by hand, and I could feel the shoes drag at different orientations. I don't know how you could turn drums out of round, but the place I took them too managed to do that.

I have chased down several vibrations on my 3.4L. I barely know what I'm doing, so FWIW.

It's not the trans mount if shifting to neutral is no change.

Front engine mounts vibrate more when stopped in gear downhill than uphill. More weight on them. It might depend on your engine shaking over a certain amount from another reason to feel bad mounts at stop, I don't know. If they look bad then I would change them regardless. The problem with vibrations I think is they can start somewhere and then travel through the truck and get amplified in another location that's also loose.

Could be a suspension part? Do small potholes cause more vibration than they should?

Like another poster said, my understanding is if you don't feel it as much in the steering wheel then it should be something at the rear end since you kind of ruled out the drive shaft.

Super interesting, I’ve considered that possibility… we have a couple machines that I can use to re surface the drums and get them out of round. I’ll have to try that, appreciate the info man!

it’s more highway speeds that make it vibrate the worst, it seems to be engine related also, right now I’m thinking the previous owner put a cheep clutch in and the bearing is out or the flywheel is warped. But the rear breaks could definitely be contributing.

Thanks for the input man, it’s very true that vibrations spread. I replaced shocks and checked all the suspension, I plan or replacing the cab mounts soon. Potholes don’t seem to affect the vibrations.

As Glamisman recommends Tranny mount would be my next part
If rubber bush is perished and movement noticed with pry bar

I had old Nissan and experienced this seats shaking issue
    Was rectified by tire rotation/balancing
    (You got that covered)
As well as drive train (balancing DS/new carrier

I was thinking possibly something to do with bed or cab mounts
    I re read the thread
And saw the cracked cab mounts per your post
    That’s interesting
Can u ‘test’ by placing a 4x4 or larger block of wood on top of a floor jack and place on the cab pinch weld?
    Multiple places
And see if movement present when jack lifted on weld?

Does throw out bearing squeak/squeak/squeak and then when clutch pedal pressed slightly, sound goes away?

Thanks for the info, I have tried testing the cab mounts as you’ve suggested, nothing too conclusive came from it. The throw out bearing does squeak a little but the vibration does change a whole lot with clutch movement, but the sound is intermittent and sometimes goes way by itself. I beefed up the tranny mount with some rubber grommets I found around the shop I work in and it doesn’t seem to be improving things very much.

FWIW I had to have my tranny rebuilt. Had a vibration that turned out to be a failed pilot bushing which made NO noise whatever. Never heard of that before but there it is. Bent the output shaft.

That sounds like a bad time, but I will definitely keep that in mind as I continue my maintenance journey, hopefully this isn’t the case. Thank you sir!
