That's a 255 on an 8" or 8.5"?

 

8.5", a little wide IMO.

 

Do you happen to have more info about rim width vs tire width in regard to holding the bead when aired down? This is a subject I've heard people mention (like in your post) but I've had a hell of a time finding any real data or solid info.

I've been trying to learn how important this factor is. I want to run skinnies but the aftermarket wheel options are garbage when it comes to trying to find something even moderately narrow. Something just rubs me as wrong about mounting a 255 on an 8-9" wheel. Some tires are rated for those wider wheels but as I see it, just because the wheel is within the "approved rim width" provided by the manufacturer doesn't necessarily mean that it is a good idea when you're looking for specific performance characteristics.

 

I don't have any real hard data to share. I come from the Jeep world (TJ/YJ) and most there doing hard crawling and airing down to 8ish PSI are running 15's and the common tire size choices are 31x10.5, 33x10.5, 33x12.5, 35x12.5. The general accepted "ideal" width for those are 7" wide for the 10.5 and 8" for the 12.5.

I definitely agree that the "approved rim width" only gives you a generally safe range, and not necessarily ideal. For offroading, I would for sure stick to the narrower end of that range, which on a 17" wheel typically means some form of stock wheels because nobody but stock makes any wheels that I see in the 7-7.5" range. Aftermarket wheel widths are generally atrocious - I think most of those offerings are by manufacturers expecting the buyer to run a 285 or 315.

 

Thanks. Yeah, I've been scouring the internet for a few years now looking for skinny options and they're few and far between, almost nonexistent. I had planned on jumping to 17's so I could run a 255 AT rather than all the MT's that are out there. I'm currently on G003's on a 7.5" wheel and will probably get the 255/85R16 AT4W (just kida peeved about the weight).

I would immediately buy a set of the 255/85/16 wildpeaks if they weren’t 58 pounds each. I’m still on the fence.

 

I would go for the tire you want if it works on the wheel width you have. I wouldn’t let weight be a determining factor, in the grand scheme weight plays very little difference compared to the other factors. Once the weight is rolling it takes little additional energy to keep it rolling.

 

Where TF is the narrow 35” for 16” wheel.

 

I have been wondering how much weight affects rolling resistance compared to width. I used to run 285/75/16 G003’s but ditched those because my braking/acceleration took too much of a hit.

The 255 AT4W’s don’t weigh much less than those tires but obviously the tread pattern and width are much more pavement friendly than the 285 G003’s.

Well, decided to stop waffling / over-analyzing my situation and just go for it. Picking up five 255/85R16 AT4W's on Monday. Not sure when I'll actually have a chance to throw them on or really give them any sort of meaningful test/assessment though.

Those look great. 265/75R16 on 16x8 + 0 I assume?

 

I'll be sure to weigh mine when I get them next week since I'll be picking up the tires loose and will be mounting them at a later date.

275/75/16 would be a great size tire for a lot of people that currently doesn't exist.
