I have been attempting to talk my oldest into getting a 1st Gen Tacoma. I even found her one with under 118k miles.

4 banger 4x4 with manual everything is a hard combo to beat for reliability. I've had two 4cyl 1st gens and 1 V6, love em all

I did find a 2006 Taco...but that would be way too much truck for her.

Nothing like shoehorning a LS motor in a taco.

How do they make the OBD2 work when it's a Chevy engine in a Toyota?

I know, that's why it's only at like a third of the life of my last first gen before I sold it to the next guy :p

They still use the Chevy computers most of the time which the OBD still works fine heck you can maintain all functions and then just turn off the modules that you're not using. Like they won't throw codes for the missing body control module if you just tell it it's like a cab chassis truck or something. It's pretty easy to modify the stock Chevy computers after 2004

I do. Throw me the numbers for those costs roughly, I recall the head gasket was 5K.

I know it's hit you a lot the past 18 months but remember that years prior (excluding the frame) it hasn't been nearly as much. Remember my Click and Clack post..averaging it out over the past 5 years I bet it's much more palatable.

I do agree it's been exacerbated by the income situation recently for you, which sucks..but then if you buy something else you have to pay monthly on that with the $$ situation still the same.

It'd be one thing if you could tap the savings, pay cash for something and still have a good bit left over maybe..MAYBE. I think you're probably more like $10-12K for it if this is fixed..great truck for many people despite it not being 4WD. Make the high costs work for you if you do that. That and take out some of your mods if you want that aren't really gonna add value.

As an aside, drop a line if you wind up going that direction of course.

That last piece is why I really find it best to hold on a while. CAS plus high interest rate.

I might be selling the 2010 RC this year and buying an MGM 2015 AC TRD Sport 6-speed; 57K miles on it. It's gonna take a lot of scrimping and saving, but I think I might just be able to pull it off without taking out a loan!

Even better deal If you can pull it off without needing a bank loan.

Parents think a stick shift would be too distracting (even though I know how to drive one), and are hinting that they'd only help pay for it if it has safety features like blind spot warning, automatic braking, rear cross traffic...

Also, after driving this 2.7L 3rd Gen, I can tell you that I do NOT want a 4-banger 3rd Gen!

I love everything about this truck except for the fact that it seems more sluggish than my truck, despite having a 6-speed transmission, and roughly 187K fewer miles!

I can't do a four-banger Toyota truck with an auto. They're way too sluggish. Looks like you need a V6 late second gen like a 2014 or 15 with the facelift.

Right l can see them wanting you to have some extra safety equipment, could possibly even give you lower insurance rates. If you want to stick with a Tacoma then 2018 would be the oldest you could go with.

Truck is being sold whole (if it gets sold), minus the patch collection and dashcam...

Manual transmission are fun, until they aren’t.
Automatic transmissions have come a LONG way.
If one is better than the other, then the other had a design flaw.
Most Auto trucks are rated to pull more.

Have you ever backed a Manual transmission up a hill with a trailer in slick conditions?
Or even on dry, good conditions. It can suck…….
A manual transmission in a truck can make it “less” fun to drive.

I went from driving manual Transmission trucks to automatics.
    I can’t say I miss the manual.

I’m of the opinion, unless the truck is a “sport” truck (Track truck).
    You don’t really need/want a manual transmission.
In a track/sports car. Yes. It is much more fun. (But still the autos can shift just as fast or faster).
