If they are structural there will be a post to beam steel connector. If there's drywall in between them and the carrying member above they are not structural. If they go straight to the beam but are just nailed without a metal connector they are most likely not structural. Given the cat walk joists run parallel to the catwalk I'm betting there's a beam on both ends that they hanger off of. If that's the case then they are not structural.

Did a little scrap reclamation today. Assembled a workbench with some road side finds and leftover hardware. Came out pretty nice.

Upstairs is 2x12’s and plywood then particleboard and carpet most places.

There aren’t any metal bits in the crawlspace and the only hangars I’ve seen were for the 4x4 cutout for florescent box above the old kitchen island. And I guess the attic trusses. I’d be surprised if there is any form of metal used above these posts.

I believe I’m seeing drywall between. I’m thinking that’s the nail in the coffin for this post?

beam spans the post and hanger for the catwalk as expected. No metal showing as far as attachment to the post.

Kids happily provide this element of quality assurance.

Thanks everyone for talking me off the ledge. This topic caused significant stress so I’m glad it’s behind me. I really prefer the posts gone.

Patio furniture is insanely expensive, so I'm going to build some basic stuff out of 2x4s and 2x6s. Found some nice plans online. It'll be covered and I'm staining and sealing it, so just plain wood is all I need.

Anyway, is it worth going to 84 Lumber over Lowe's to get materials? Lowe's is by the house but 84 is by the office. Should I be looking anywhere else?

Lumber yards usually have a better selection at a price. I always have to dig through and check each board at the box stores. Lots of warped and damaged, but some decent in the pile.

I noticed trim around the house was not looking so hot. I decided to replace with PVC trim, starting with the locations that needed replacing the most. The newest location I started with recently is now a "can of worms," please see pics below:
    20240104_170704.jpg 20240104_170710.jpg 20240104_170717.jpg 20240104_170722.jpg 20240104_170745.jpg IMG_20240104_171838_01.jpg

Plan was to replace all of the dark gray trim up furnace/fireplace exhaust covering. But once my pry bar sunk into the trim when removing nails on old trim I knew there was more. Where to begin, lol?
