Windshield fluid reservoir… stem?

I (or more likely some mechanic) broke the stem off my windshield wiper reservoir. Does anyone know where I can source just the stem? Seems like they come apart right?

 

It is common for them to get brittle and break

You could try plastic epoxy for a temporary fix.

 

It’s gone… only the lower part of the stem and the cap/filter remains

 

I made my own filler to get through the winter.

Try and find a used resviour while things are apart maybe a new pump

 

I can't find a filler neck for sale by itself. Maybe a local u-pull yard or just upgrade to a unit you can relocate to the passenger fender?

 

Just buy once and cry once. $117 from the dealer. If it lasted 20+ years, then you’ll be good. And Toyota calls it a Jar.

There are two different ones, one with a low level sensor hole, and one without.

If your truck doesn’t have cruise control, Amazon and eBay have relocation kits for pretty cheap that move the “Jar” under the hood.

 

The reservoir necks are not sold separately, I went through exactly this last year. See this thread. They do separate and you should be able to get just the neck but you can't.

Until you figure it out a tight wrap of duct tape will keep it from sloshing out.

Aftermarket ones are fine, got mine from Rock Auto (they've doubled in price now but still less than OEM.) They also come with the cap and the pump is included, if you go OEM you'll need to buy those separately.

Just make sure you get the right one. If you look through that thread you'll see there are not only two capacities but there are ones with a hole in the bottom for the sensor and ones without the sensor hole. Get this part right, saw a video of a guy that got the one with the hole and didn't need it, he went to great lengths to plug the hole in a brand new reservoir LOL . . . .

I just had to replace mine due to the same condition. They get old and crack, they’re plastic. Here’s what I paid.

 

Try Amazon you’ll find some cheaper aftermarkets - and check the reviews.

 

I think they are on Amazon for like 50 bucks.

 

I would be curious to see if there is any difference between OEM and what is sold on Amazon. I wasn't ready to take the chance so I bit the bullet and stuck with OEM. Maybe someone who has bought the one from Amazon will chime in.

 

Amazon, Rock Auto, Fleabay, they're all the same Chinese aftermarket product and will do just fine. I tried to sum up the differences here, the biggest diff being the A.M. ones come with a cap and pump, OEM is just the tank.

The cliff notes:

- The neck doesn't easily come out on OEM ones, it does on aftermarket, but the point is moot, you can't just order/replace the neck for either.
- Two versions, with or without the sensor hole, get the right one. "Cold weather package" is the one with the sensor hole in the bottom.
- Two sizes, 2.5L and 4.5L, most will be able to use the 4.5L but confirm before ordering.
- The gasket/grommet for the sensor hole is smaller and feels a little loose but it seems to seal up fine, mine isn't leaking yet but I added a little Goop for good measure. Pics in the above thread.
- OEM versions are just the tank, you have to order the cap separate and re-use the pump, aftermarket ones come with the cap, top filter screen and pump (mine did anyway)

 

Does anyone know if the 1996 4x4 3.4 base model has a sensor or no?

 

It may or may not. You need to get under the truck and look. I wasn’t sure either and took a look and saw the sensor. Glad I did or I would’ve ordered the wrong part.

It's really easy to look.
Pull the passenger side tire
Stick your head under there and look.

There is a shield outside the reservoir (that has to be pulled off and stapled to the new one.) Look up in there from the bottom and you'll see if you have two holes with wires or one. One is for the pump and the other is for the sensor, if it's there.
