I took the seal out before checking how far it was recessed. I can see and feel a shoulder inside. If I push the seal all the way to the shoulder it would seat up against that metal cup inside. But if I do that then the seal has no gap for it to be removed? I feel like it had a gap to be removed.. this is hard to explain.

Should I be pushing that seal all the way back to that stop or shoulder. Or do I push it in enough to be flush with the outside housing?

Are there any "witness marks" where the old seal sat in the case?

If not look for a ridge on the shaft, if there is a ridge try to place the seal so the sealing lip is in a new location. Either further in or out. If you have no ridge on the shaft or wear marks then it doesn't really matter how far in the seal goes so I would just put it flush for simplicity
