Usually 30. 25 if it gets real nasty… or it gets cold and the pressure drops and I don’t feel like inflating them

That's something to remember with this cold snap coming.
    Check your pressures.

I just got home from driving in this &^$@. 35 psi was noticeabley better traction than 40. Gonna drop to 30 next time I head to the garage. When this storm hits 2nd gear, I'll take it for a spin around the block. I knew 40 was too high, but I wanted the Wildepeaks to work at that pressure. 40 psi is where I got the best gas mileage while keeping the smooth ride. I'm not gonna worry about mpg's in the snow.

I just did round 1 of snow removal, about 6 inches. We had to go into town so I could get a blood test. Sure am glad we did it 7am.

The 30 psi test run did not go as well as I had hoped. There may be 4 inches of snow on my road. Got to the neighbors house 250 yards awayl. His new house is causing a drift to form at the top of the hill. It's over a foot deep. That hill is generally blown clear. I could not get out of my driveway in 2WD, and when I hit that drift, I was directed toward the ditch. I didn't go in, but the passenger front was off pavement. I simply backed up and that was enough testing for me. The only major plus is that I didn't have to do the "brake-slide, off brake-to steer" routine to get in the garage. Backed in with no issues. I guess that's a win.

At a certain point, it doesn’t really matter what tires you have. Need studs or chains when it’s real awful.

also why are you out in the snow in 2wd? Put it in 4! The back end is so light it’s hard for anything to get traction in 2

    For science.....

I tried and 2WD didn't cut it. I had to use 4WD to get out of the driveway and up the road. I was hoping 2WD would get the job done. 4WD uphill was OK until I hit that snowdrift.

We're not allowed to use either of those in Wisconsin. A proper winter tire is as good as it gets here.

3PMSF all terrains are all I've used on a 4Runner, so far. Days like today, I wish I had a set of Hakkapeliittas for winter. I'm actually considering switching to something a little less aggressive for summer and using real winter tires instead of AT's.

    Reported.

The sooner you mount them, the sooner they will self clear :sawzall:

I..... Want that. Also are you giving it the beans or just like, tip toeing around?

Sounds an awful lot like..... Fun :D

To be fair, ATs are a solid "get you home in the weather" choice. For real winter driving, there is no substitute.

In the winter I keep four 70lb tubes of sand over the axle. Simple 2x4 frame or cargo divider keeps them in place. Works well for me.

If it’s too bad, I just stay home til it’s not lol when I was out earlier this week there was a few times I was like whelp this is where I’m gonna be stuck but it just kept going. I was surprised. It’s a good thing I put on new tires a month ago though

I suppose the other option to get around is a snowmobile or pack of sled dogs

Agreed. I've always been able to get where I needed to on good AT's. But, I feel much more comfortable on snow tires than AT's. Plus, I think a Taco or 4Runner on real winter tires would be a blast on a day like this. :D

I kept a few bags in my Taco, but I didn't really try winter driving without them, so I don't know how much difference they made. IMO, tires are the biggest factor. But, it still makes sense that a little extra weight over the axle should improve traction. :notsure:
