You're funny, Toyota won't care one minute.
They sell millions of vehicles, they're not going to care if they lose a 100 clients.

Yes, good advise. Drop in a used motor and move on. Save yourself a lot of grief.

The dealer is a private enterprise. The Toyota name might be on the building and it might be Toyota products they sell, but in the end it is a private company and Toyota will distance themselves from that private operation. As for the dealer themselves, they will push the ball into your court to provide proof that it is thier fault. Unless you have video evidence of them faking a service and still charging you for it, you will be hard pressed to prove anything.

Clearly you can do the work, take the hit, learn the hard lesson and never return to that dealer. Change your own oil. I know my oil is changed correctly and what product is in there because I did it.

On the other hand, Toyota and the dealer need to at least know about this. Even if recompense is futile…let them learn to improve their product/service. The benefit of this forum is that it reaches a broader audience than just a single customer on his/her own. Let the dealer sweat and maybe it improves their service. Maybe this is part of a pattern. No one will know if we silently move on.

Exactly, I have been changing the oil in my own vehicles for over 50 years now. The 4Runner had 325K miles on it when I sold it and everything still worked like the day I bought it.

If you honestly hoped Toyota would assist you in any way, you should have taken the truck to the dealer that you used for service and had the noise diagnosed by them. Having been a dealership technician for 13 years, I can be pretty sure that they wouldn’t even offer you customer goodwill on any part of the repair. Sorry for the negativity but it’s reality.

The one thing this thread has done for me is I will be doing my own oil changes. I do other fluid and maintenance items, but oil just seemed easy to have a shop do in 30 minutes while I’m working on other stuff. Nope. I’m a 5k interval person and will be doing the changes myself now.

I apply the same thought process and supply my own fluids to VIOC and Indys for my other car. It’s not so much to save money (though that is nice) but to know 100% what is going into my vehicles.

Didn't know the problem until we took the engine apart and isolated the cause, which then pointed to the dealer issue. For those geniuses on the thread who were psychic and would've just *known* to start with the dealer after they laid hands on it, I didn't see you around the shop.

Don't worry about the half assed post to your thread. Many of us are having a drink when posting, including me now.

Thankyou for the pictures and documentation.

I'm talking to some folks on the Classified/For sale part of the site who might have a donor motor, haven't sealed the deal just yet. A block could work too, though I guess there are less variables on a whole motor to just drop in. Anyone have anything feel free to drop me a message, maybe we can make a deal?

Only thing to note is engine with vacuum pump and without vacuum pump. Just make sure you have you parts off yours if you have the opposite. The engine itself is still the same.

Check your original post. You “diagnosed” the noise as a rod knock before even disassembling anything. You could have used a bore scope or pulled a valve cover and stopped right there.

You would have just ended up paying the dealer to tear the engine apart and tell you that you need a new engine. They dont really do the investigative work especially on an engine 110k miles outside of a warranty. Regardless of if they did the oil changes.

There is nothing wrong with bulk oil per se. The fleet of vehicles I work on has a tanker truck drop off bulk oil among other fluids and greases. In my 18 years I have not seen an oil related failure outside of one tech finger tightening a drain plug after an oil change. The plug fell out 6 blocks from the shop. The vehicle went another 4 blocks before the engine siezed up. Vehicle had less than 20,000kms too.

For the most part the engines go for ½ a million kilometers before a rebuild. All diesel and Dino oil...
