New Transfer Case Cost ?

So two days ago I was driving down paved road when I felt vibration then loud banging sound. I quickly pulled over and put truck into park. Looking underneath I noticed front drive line hanging down. Closer inspection revealed broken u bolt and damage to accuator.
I had truck trailer hauled to Toyota dealership and after inspection they said truck needed new transfer case and maybe new drive line. Repair quote was $6400 for new transfer case with install and $2000 for new driveline if needed.

Truck is 2016 TRD Off Road with 104k miles. I own truck free & clear. I think truck was worth $21-23k before this incident. Do you think it is worth to have truck repaired with the miles it has ?. I do not believe my insurance will cover this repair.

 

Get your truck back
Fix your self or at least go somewhere that won’t rip you off

 

I’d google the cost
That will give you an idea what it costs with less dealer markup and labor.
Not to mention working used parts.

I don’t know what’s wrong with your truck. “Some guy said” isn’t a documentation.
A broken vehicle is harder and cheaper to sell than a working vehicle.

I mean. Theres markup and $230/hr labor. Widely known.

It would kind of be on me.

 

Before you tow again, find a reputable independent that’ll repair w used components. I wouldn’t put a new OE transfer case on an 8 yo truck with over 100k on it, but it’s still worth fixing.
I’d also find out what happened,,, so you’re sure it doesn’t eat the new/used one alive.

 

I picked up a transfer case that would go in my 3rd gen and convert it to manual shift for about $200. You absolutely can get a drop in replacement for under $500. Getting a new driveshaft built from the very best of shops shouldn't cost any more than $500 as well. Do not pay the dealer those absurd amounts.

 

Find a used case and driveshaft off a wrecked truck. Where are you located?

 

Find a used transfer case as mentioned. Driveshaft you can buy new OEM for like $600, which is high but since it’s a somewhat specialized design I’d go that route over aftermarket.

 

Have any write up type details on that? Curious to see what you did, I really want a manual case but have only really found info on the FJ case.

 

Insurance isnt for this type of incident. Are you actually considering not repairing?

 

If you’re safe with a wrench and jackstands, you’re probably going to save yourself ~$5k or more by doing it yourself. $5k if you have a good buddy.

With that kind of delta, you can even rent a vehicle for 2 weeks while you sort this out.

Several good suggestions here for sourcing the parts you need. The dealer quote is rediculous. "New driveline if needed" : This is a red flag IMO. Don't they know? Prediction: The status WILL change to: "IS" needed within 4 hours of them putting it on the lift.

Call around your area and find an independent shop to do it. Doing this repair is not NASA Rocket Science. Also see if they can identify the cause of this catastrophic failure. XFer cases don't just blow up. If it was me, I wouldn't add the complexity of switching to a manual X-fer case: your truck is too new. Stick with the stock set-up: Plug-and-play=less cost. Be sure and circle back with an update: especially the cause of failure. Good Luck!

Had to replace the transfer case on my 2nd gen about 2 years ago. Was like $1700 at a local transmission shop. They sourced a used t-case with some 40k miles on it from a 4 Runner or Taco. I think the case was from Copart

 

Thanks, I would love to do work myself however I'm not qualified and can't see myself dropping transfer case in my driveway in middle of winter. The reason I had it hauled to Toyota dealership 50 miles away is the town I live in has only couple small repair shops and I wanted repair done by certified technician.

 

It *would* go in my truck as in if I was in OP's situation. It's just a 4Runner manual shift case, same as the FJ. I got it to experiment w/ and now it's a planetary donor for when I get to doing the eco-crawler.

 

Insurance has covered critter damage to wiring harnesses as documented in several posts in here to the tune of $4,000 in some case less the $1,000 deductible... So you never know. They can always say "no", but why not ask?

 

Perhaps he drove through an extremely large pothole that caused the damage??
