On my way home today I got stopped by the police, they checked my front windshield tint, which is legal here. Read the law if you understand Spanish:

.....anyways my front windshield tint is 40% same as my doors. Tint is legal down to 35%. When he measured my doors they passed, but when he measured my windshield he said it was reading 16.X%. Funny thing is my windshield tint was installed the same day as the doors from the same roll of tint that was used for the doors. Still, even though it was reading less than the acceptable percentage he was not going to give me a ticket. I politely asked him if he could measure again since the tint is 40%. He did and it read this time 32.X% which I find less surprising than 16.X%.

First, let me say that I will be changing the tint to 50% which should read higher than 35% for sure. Second, I know some people here hate the idea of windshield tint, but please this topic is not about love/hate windshield tint, I have my reasons for having it, I have said them before in other topics and will not be saying them again. Third, I want to clarify that I'm in no way ranting or complaining, the officer is doing his job, he was polite as I was, and he let me go with no ticket or warning, my question is more about physics than any other thing.

Now I have two questions for tint installers/police officers of the forum

    1) The tint is two years old, I know tint degrades with time, but when this happens could it somehow affect the reading? (light waves, transmission etc etc)

    2) I noticed that the officer had a bit of trouble aligning the measuring tool (getting both pieces completely flat), since the 2nd Gen windshield is really curved, if he can't place the tool completely flat, could that also affect the reading?
