Rumor that the Tundra caps have new latches.

 

Good to know and hope the rumors are true, but until I see it available for purchase, I won’t get excited. We’ve been waiting for a couple years now, what’s a couple more months .

 

It's my first year with my Gen2 cap and winter finally showed up here in Canada. It's been -26°C (-15°F) and my latches are frozen. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks for helping keep them functioning in this weather? I have to drive mountain passes regularly all year, so they tend to get filled with fine silt when it's wet or snowy too. I've been rinsing them out with water and then using an air compressor to blow them out, but I don't want to do that while it's this cold.

 

have you tried to lube the locks and grease the latch spring assembly?
I’m not saying this will work, but just a suggestion and it is what I plan on doing this week to mine

 

It's not a preventative, but I used to keep a can of this in the glove box when the lock cylinders would freeze in my old 4Runner:

Get the covers for your locks. A keep a can of de-icer.

 

Do you have latch covers?? If not, contact RSI.

 

Out of curiosity has anyone here had their SmartCap windows tinted any darker than it comes from the manufacturer?

Has anyone had any luck completely sealing the positive pressure vent? I plan on doing very little driving where dust will be an issue. I also live in the PNW where rain is more of an issue and this thing leaks like a sieve. Any suggestions? (I mean besides the stupid "Sell your SmartCap!" troll comments )

 

If you disassemble, I'm sure you can seal the vent slot to waterproof it.
Id try to make it more water resistant to keep some positive pressure / ventilation.

Yup. Windows are fully functional. Just cut the pieces of material to match the glass, soap up the glass, apply, and squeegee. It comes with enough material for trial and error.

For the back window i got this:

I cut this material wider than the back window and sealed magnets up along the edges. When I have stuff in my bed that I don't want lookielous seeing, I just cover the back window, with the magnets holding the material in place. Works perfectly. When it's not in use I roll it up and attach it in the back corner of the cap with the magnets.

 

Cot damn, you're just a regular MacGyver. I'm going to copy you. Do you remember what magnets you got or just any old type?

When I think back on it I would have rather got the EVO Adventure but ehh oh well. The end goal is to have an RTT on top so either one serves my purpose, which was to have topper that could support some actual weight.

 

For those of you that have a full bin installed what do you think? I'm thinking about getting one for the passenger side but curious if it's big enough to be useful. Any insight from those that have experience with it would be appreciated.

@OffroadAlliance.com Any info on when caps will ship? Ordered mine on 11/28/2023. Just saw today that the product listing changed from shipping 1/23 to 2/12 now. When I called a couple weeks ago I was told there was no info on when these would actually ship.

 

I can't speak for them however it looks like Mid Feb for most Tacoma Models. Also they should finally have the new latches on those. The 6.5 ft Tundra caps are showing up with the new latches.

 

I got more info on my email inquiry yesterday. These are coming out of the new production facility, which has had some delays. Word from RSI is they are doing a run at the end of this month into February. That would be awesome if they have the new latches. Time to finally get the bed rack sold so I can seal up the bed as best as possible.
