I have a westinghouse 9500 watt dual fuel - it was like 500$
It was also on clearance because it doesn't have the goberment mandated CO shutoff shit..
I feel like, if you are stupid enough to run a generator in a closed space - you should win that Darwin award you are striving so hard for

It ain't super quiet but it does the trick and can run almost 24hr on 6 gal

We need something pretty quiet for dry camping. I don't want to be "that guy" who brings out a construction grade generator and you can't have a conversation within a mile because it's screaming all day. Plus, with the 9500 it can easily power our entire house. We'd just need to install a generlink into our main.

Being 100% dependent on electricity both for the house and the well dictates that we probably should be prepared instead of wondering why

I have an interlock on my main panel
I have a 60gal pressure tank on the well and before the generator, I had to be careful about how I used that 60gal of water

I used to loose power once every couple of years - that was tolerable; now I loose power 4-5 times a year - that is not tolerable
+ I got a garage freezer and I be damned if I loose all that food

So, there’s suddenly a loud knock on my door and shouting “OPEN UP, IT’S THE POLICE!”
I yelled back “PROVE IT! SING ROXANNE”

We only have a 35 gallon holding tank. It'll last about 3-4 days if we had to make it last that long. We lose power about once or twice a year but inevitably it's during the summer when the grid is most taxed. Last summer it went out for 4 hours. To your point, with freezers and refrigerators in the garage, they thaw quickly.

Yup - I waited till I got the generator before I bought the garage freezer!

During the winter it isn't an issue but we usually loose power a few times in the summer for 8-10hr too = bad

13° outside. I let my spoiled, desert born chihuahua outside. She stepped out on the porch, said “Screw this. I’ll hold it till spring” and came back inside

We get at least a dozen outages a year, though I don't keep an exact count.

    It's the squirrels
Lotsa oak trees here, lotsa squirrels.

They get on the transformer and fry their asses (though a lucky few survive and come to after awhile).
Then the power is out for maybe an hour until the lineman comes.
He gets out his telescoping fiberglass poll and pushes the swing arm of the cutoff switch back into place.
I can't recall the term for it, maybe someone here does?
Watched 'em do it many times.

I once talked on the phone with a guy at the utility about putting a squirrel cage (which exist) over the switch.
He said unfortunately, in their experience, they don't work very well at keeping squirrels out and make things more difficult for the lineman.

Maybe once a year we get an extended outage from downed lines.
Usually because of a downed tree, but sometimes somebody will crash their car into a utility pole.

Not too long ago some mope knocked down a pole right next to the substation east of town.
That was dramatic, lines down on rte 16 (the main road) and sparks everywhere.
Traffic was diverted onto a street just short of it, so I got a good look.
The utility had several crews there, and no wonder.

Maybe @Gen1TacoLady or @Delta09 remember that one?

My car has GPS to tell me where to go. But doesn’t tell me why I wanted to go there :notsure:
