AGM BATTERY CHARGING - ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE BOOSTER

I think it wont fit otherwise.. Cant say for sure since i trimmed it before inserting. But took less than a minute to trim

 

I was going to use an add-a-fuse to maintain the stock fuse.

 

My guess is that the original shape is so that it can only be inserted one way in whatever the original application was.
Even the littlefuse equivalent is shaped the same way. No harm in trimming it off so that it fits

 

I didn't have to, but I did so the diode would seat better in the socket.

 

I just purchased these 2 today at the same price. I had to order in store.

 

I did a test fit in the add-a-fuse. No issues with inserting it all the way, so I'm going to leave it alone. I know it's just plastic, but less work for me

 

I just finished this mod using the $4 Littelfuse 1A mini diode and 2 add a fuse adapters.
The voltage bump went from 13.61 to 14.34.

I noticed Torque Pro displays a lower voltage than my meter reads at the battery. 13.61 at the battery is 13.1 in Torque Pro and OBD Link. 14.34 at the battery reads 14.0 in Torque Pro/OBD Link. I tried using a different newer voltmeter and it was the same.

I hope this keeps my second 6 year old X2 24F AGM battery going a few more years. The first X2 battery I bought was replaced under warranty after 3 years. I'm sure due to under charging.

 

Mine pulls about 14.3V as well on these cold days. Call ‘er fixed for now.

 

I would be concerned about increasing the voltage to the electronics above design. They will run a little hotter and if something is borderline it could push it over. Probably OK but as a controls engineer I'm OCD about voltage supply quality and level. Yes, there is a tolerance range, this just moves it a little closer to the upper tolerance.

 

On a Arizona "cold" snap morning I got to 14.8, but it usually stays in the 14.2 to 14.5 range for me. I do still plug in every month or so to be sure though.

 

That is the main reason why I waited so long to do this mod. I haven't seen any negative posts so far.

 

Has anybody had issues when winching? I'm running the tapped and fused GM style diode with an optima yellow top which has all been working awesome.

Last weekend, I was out night wheeling and had to do a HARD winch pull which ultimately fried my alternator(1yr old Carquest premium refurb). I have done a lot of winching with this setup in the past and haven't had a single issue beyond a dead wireless controller. I had my head unit and amp on but wasn't playing music and also running 90w halogen headlights. Had to wheel out another two hours on the battery and LED fogs.

At any rate I'm curious if the voltage mod may have had anything to do with it or if anybody else has had this happen?

 

I doubt .6V had anything to do with it other than coincidence. That sounds like a straight up failure of the alternator from over load.

 

My 6 year old X2 24F battery just started the dying process. Repair function charging on the NOCO 7.2 only lasts a few days.
I bought a Costco Interstate 24F AGM and after some researched removed the voltage boost mod. I read a non dual purpose AGM battery can't handle a constant charge of 14+ volts.

 

I installed a ebay one someone makes that keeps your fuse. I did a lot of testing first while waiting on my x2power 27F agm to come in. I bought mine in December of last year. Max voltage i get when it was stupid cold out and hasnt been ran is 14.8. I did a lot of studying on @crashnburn80 write up. I actually monitor my voltage with my scan gauge in case it fails. I checked today to make sure all is good. My scan gauge is dead on with the charging voltage. I will give him props for making that write up for us enthusiasts. I will say, i cranked my truck at 0 degrees that time with the battery only being a few weeks old, IT CRANKED HARD!!!!! 930cca at 0 degrees. Awesome investment in my opinion.

 

I’ve had my setup since April ‘19 & absolutely Love it. -40 is still reality here so a fail gets mighty real. Audio system sounds better too.

 

I noticed a differance with my jbl system from the factory after install. Agms are far superior over regular flooded. They deliver way more power.
