Got my yellow cedar pieces all cut and applied to my lower cabinet parts today

I used Titebond 3 and Bandy Clamps to get the banding set and then ran 2" painter's tape on them for the glue set duration . There was a couple shelves that were being stubborn and I had to reinforce the tape with some Bandy Clamps .

All my lower parts banded and set aside to dry

I wanted my Red Cedar banding on the upper boxes / shelves to blend together as far as grain and colour goes as that will all be exposed and visual . I cut my Red Cedar out of 6' clear 2x4's I had as my longest pieces need to be just under 6' and the shelves are just under 3'

i realized this morning that the total banding I needed for each upper cabinet and it's shelves could come out of the banding I got out of each 2x4 assuring that the colour / grain on each unit will all be the same . I had kept the banding from each 2x4 separated and shrink wrapped together (you can make that out in the previous pic of all my banding) but in order to apply the matching banding to each individual upper cabinet's parts , I needed to separate them and label them in packages for each upper cabinet . I did that this afternoon .

"I'll take "Things Nobody Else Would Ever Notice" for $200 Alex"

I'll start banding my uppers tomorrow

Worked on flush trimming my lower cabinet banding this morning so I can stack all the lower cabinet components out of the way for now

Banding overhangs about 1/8" top and bottom of the plywood component

Banding flushed up top and bottom

To do that I'm using the Festool MFK 700 router and horizontal base plate so it acts as a lipping plane

All my lower cabinet components banded in yellow cedar

Demonstration of how the MFK 700 works to flush up banding (not me)

it's pretty amazing what it produces for a flush edge

Looks like it doesn't require more sanding than what you would do to finish sand the face of the plywood either.
Clean as hell is what I mean to say.

You can adjust the cutting depth very precisely . The cutting depth adjustment knob (green knob on top of the fence plate in pic) is about 1 1/4" diameter and a full revolution of the knob equals 1mm of height adjustment.

I gave myself an extra day off today , stayed home and after a marathon stint yesterday and today , got all my red cedar edge banding glued to all my upper cabinet components

Plus I flush trimmed one shelf that I had done yesterday , I think the red cedar is going to look good . Here is a close up of the edge you get with the Festool MFK 700 router , this has not been sanded yet

I've used the Emtech 2000 with the Cross Link Catalyst for table tops and it holds up very well. It does have a slight amber tint to it and it sprays very well.

    Thanks for the link

    I'm not spraying

i used the waterborne Varathane on my Birch plywood cabinets I previously built for the bathroom and so far so good . I think I'm likely to go that route again

No pics , just a progress update

This weekend I got all my upper cabinet components flush trimmed

All 157 pieces are now banded and flush trimmed lol

Next up is final dimensioning of everything , then I can rout shelf pin / drawer slide holes with the Festool LR32 system and then finally assemble everything

Started cutting all my panels to finished sizes this weekend on my track saw crosscut set up

I'm using the Festool LR32 system to drill all my shelf pin and drawer slide system holes . That system is designed to work in the European 32mm cabinet system where all side panels are in multiples of 32mm. The system uses stop blocks on the back of the Festool holey rail to register the panel for hole boring with the router . I learned in a previous test run that getting the panels to very accurately fit between the stops made life way easier later when boring the holes so this time when I went to cut my panels to length I tried a test piece against the LR32 stop blocks to make sure it was a tight fit and when I hit my perfect length I locked in my flag stops on the Benchdogs.UK crosscut fence to cut all my different sized panels

Next weekend is LR32 time then assembly

We've had about 1' of snow here in the last few days , at first it was really cold (-15C) so the snow was light and fluffy but in true west coast BC fashion it warmed up and turned to wet , heavy snow , then freezing rain and then rain making all the trees heavy with wetloads of snow on their branches .

We haven't been able to get down to our jobsite in a couple days , so I've been puttering away on my shop cabinets .

Last night I was in my basement at about 10:30 playing some Playstation and all of a sudden the power went dead . Not that surprising or unusual , so while downstairs I got on my iphone to report the outage and I walked upstairs about 5 minutes after the power went out .

When I got upstairs , looking back through the trees towards the shop there was a massive orange glow lighting up our entire neighbourhood and looking to be coming from my shop and drop pole and the transformer on the primary pole right at my shop driveway gate .

It took a second for me to grasp what I was looking at . I could hear and see massive power arcs shooting up from where the primary hydro pole transformer is but the glow extended down way to the left where my shop sits , in other words , I was certain both the hydro pole , my secondary drop pole and my shop were on fire , like fully engulfed bad .

I ran into our bedroom and woke up my wife and then threw on my boots , grabbed a flashlight and started running through the foot of snow in my pajamas and untied work boots while dialing and reaching 911 dispatch to send the fire department

I took a couple long minutes of heavy slogging under snow weighted branches to get back to the shop to thankfully discover that although the powerlines were in fact on fire and arcing , it wasn't my shop on fire but a group of trees that had fallen from the other side of the road , yanked the primary off the pole and the trees and surrounding scrub was on fire about 50' away from my shop driveway

Fire Department showed up within 10 minutes , the power line was arcing and burning the tree the whole time , BC Hydro got there about 15 minutes later and killed the power , rebuilt the line section and our power was back on at about 2:00 am

I thought this thread was going to need a reboot
