24' Tacoma vs 24' Colorado thoughts

Does it come with adaptive cruise control?

One thing Toyota (and Subaru) have done is provide almost the entire suite of essential safety and convenience tech with any and all vehicles.
Toyota has made the cross traffic and side warnings optional in the upgraded tech package, but Safety Sense has the essentials...pre-collision detection, road sign assist, and adaptive cruise control.
It was a revelation moving from a 1997 Tacoma to a 2021 with adaptive cruise control!

 

It’s not standard, it’s part of a package on Trail Boss & up. Even ZR2 it’s optional. But at $52k it will have it. The base ZR2 will have standard CC but some other safety stuff. I will say that ACC is wonderful.

 

With matching feature sets, the gap isn’t $10k. A base OR vs base trail boss is more like $4k, but the TB offers a far smaller feature set (like not even standard cruise control, while the OR has adaptive cruise)

a premium OR vs ZR2 is a $1500 difference or so.

Also, fwiw, at the bottom end, the Colorado is cheaper than a SR/SR5 but doesn’t even offer a 2-speed transfer case in some trims. Gotta make sure you compare the whole package

 

That little Motor Trend thing says if your willing to give up a few luxury items, but then the trade off is the extra HP and Torque.

 

Dodge has just announced they are making a midsize pick up, I’m not sure if they plan on selling it in the US.

 

I think it’s more than just luxury items. TB doesn’t have a selectable rear locker, for instance.

 

Find the ACC miserable, drive mostly two lane roads, use cruise not to get a speeding ticket, and they love to give speeding tickets here.

If the vehicle in front of you makes a right hand turn, the ACC does know how to coast, there is usually plenty of time not to even touch the brakes as that vehicle makes the turn. The ACC likes to slam on the brakes in those situations, plus it can’t differentiate turn off lanes, if the vehicle in front of you turns into one, it slams on the brakes. Have almost been rear ended because of it.

Be nice if I could turn it off and leave it off, instead of having to hold the button for 3 seconds every time I use cruise.

I mean when I see a car signaling to turn or they’re slowing down I just cancel the CC and allow it to coast. Then once he’s is clear, I re-engage. Not that much of a problem for me.

 

Then what is the point of having ACC then?

On the interstate it nicks the mpgs, since it is constantly on and off the throttle.

 

You’re obsessed with trying to match vehicle features exactly. It’s not happening. Why can’t you just admit that the Tacoma is much more expensive than the competition?

 

I saw a couple in Mexico a couple months ago. It looked pretty nice.

It is, but that MT excerpt is misleading. The TB is not $10k less than a comparable base OR. It’s $10k less than a higher-optioned “as tested” OR.

The Tacoma is more expensive. It’s not a huge gap, though. Same with the ranger. Closely matching the feature set, the ranger is within a few grand of the tacoma. At $2-3k difference for equivalent vehicles, I think a lot of us consider reputation (and aftermarket support for me) to be worth it. I’m still open to both the ranger and collie, but 2024s aren’t out yet

 

I wouldn’t even compare the TB to an OR. TB is a SR with a lift.

 

Once the hybrids launch, this conversation will be over.

 

... because the Hybrid will cost about $4K additional over the existing Tacoma and increase the cost disadvantage to Colorado/Canyon, or because the torque will be more than the Colorado/Canyon? Methinks the discussion will continue.

 

Closer in features, true. Which makes them almost identically priced.

 

Hybrid will have 35 ft-lbs more torque, but big deal. Colorado will have 7700 lbs of towing compared the Tacoma 6000 lbs. and for much much less. That is a lot of wiggle room in capability and price.

Don’t see the point having all that torque if it tows less. No real gains in mpgs as far as we can tell right now either. If there are, the upcharge kills any fuel savings.
