255/85 R16 Owners Experience

Discount installed a set of St Maxx on Saturday and I've already had them rebalanced and my wheel still shakes. I even moved them around and had an alignment. It has to be the tires.....so I think I'm going to take these back. I think they would be fine if they'd balance, but they won't. So now I'm on the hunt again.

 

2015 DCSB, 2 inch lift, BFG KM3s. Rubbed on the very front flaps (the ones in front of the front tire) after a week or two. Removed the flaps and no more rubbing. Noticeably louder on the streets, but in a good way. Noise dissapates at highway speed. Smoother ride than my 265/75/16 BFG KO2s.

 

I’m currently running 265/75/16 Cooper at3’s on 16x7 4Runner wheels. The tires just barely fill out the wheel well. I want to run 255/85/16 Cooper st maxx but keep the same look. I want to avoid using spacers if possible so I’m looking for wheels that might work better with the skinnier tires

 

I run a 16x8 0 offset which seems to be a popular option. I went with stealth custom series F5 and love them.

 

It’s time for me to look at new wheels so I’m shopping. I’ve been looking at the method bead grips but the offset is going to make me rub, I think. Anyone else running those wheels with their pizza cutters?

 

I have the same wheel/tire combo. I love the look, just the right amount of poke. What psi are you running just daily driving?

 

I like them around ~33 cold. I should chalk test but haven’t. They seem to be wearing well so far. Just hit 10k miles

 

I ran mine at 37 cold for a while. Better gas mileage but twitchy handling and more Center tire wear. 30-32 cold was nice but MPGs really suffered. Whatever PSI you go, it will probably be close to a wash with more gas at lower PSI and more tire wear expense at higher PSI. I'd go with what feels the best for handling and the type of daily driving you do.

Does anyone have photos of how the 255/85/16 looks on a 16x8 wheel with a -25 offset? Now that Falken has finally put out an all terrain in this size I'm looking at going to this size.

 

I am getting new tires this year and was really looking at downsizing to a 265/75/16 since no one was making any that weren't load range E, UNTIL THIS....

Although they are still 58.4lbs per tire. Cooper ST MAXX is also 58lbs per tire and load range E, so why are they so heavy?

Makes me think it’s an E in disguise. . They have something new going on with their sidewall.

 

I got my new 255/85/16 BFG KM3s mounted this morning. Totally stock, no lift, etc. no rubbing whatsoever, though it is close at full stuff and turned. Next to the 265/70/16 for reference. I love em so far!

 

The C-load 255/85R16 AT4W is BEEFY. Sidewalls were easily as thick, more likely thicker than the Geolandar G003's they were were replacing (which are E-load). I know thickness isn't everything, construction is also obviously very important. But so far, it looks to me that these are extremely tough and robust tires. Only time will tell.

I'm not a fan of the weight but I have a hunch Falken was trying to walk the line between comfort and durability. Specifically trying to build a tough offroad tire that isn't noisy with a harsh ride. I'm gonna guess these AT4W's are as durable, or more durable than the G003's all while being much quieter and much more comfortable. I don't remember it being that bad going from the AT3W to the G003 - seemed like just a minor decrease in comfort. But now it feels like a relatively large improvement in comfort going from the G003 to AT4W. This is all super subjective of course.

 

So no longer a Taco owner (2007 4Runner now), but I have a question. From what I have read on the 4Runner forums front suspension is the same on my 2007 4Runner as 2nd gen Taco.
with that being true has anyone run 255/75 R17 tires on stock suspension with the same wheels as @Tribull in 17"? Did they rub? If so where, when & how badly?

That looks really good. I'm running the same tire on stock pro wheels. I ordered f5s - 25mm matte bronze should be showing up anytime now. Did a cmc and kpoffroad alignment cams/octagons as a precaution. Love the 255s

 

255/85r16 Falken Wildpeak AT4W’s mounted. Zero rubbing with 2” lift and TRD Baja wheels. Very smooth and so quiet compared with the Duratracs they replaced.

 

Sigh…. Still another 10k miles left in my Toyos.
