Snow in the Tacoma

I owned a locker tacoma and wheeled with buddies that had lockers.

If you're stuck, turning it on just makes you sink deeper. I watched it from outside once and its pretty comical.

I had it happen in a river crossing, thought I was clever hot shit and it sank another 4 inches.

Gotta learn somehow I guess.

 

I haven't found that the rear locker makes anything worse. I just haven't that it helps much in most situations.

I don't have it handy, but there is a video of a group off-road trip I was on last winter where we trying to climb a maybe 15-20% curvy snow and ice covered hill in the woods. All of rigs with open diffs were spinning a single front wheel like you would expect. In the video of me with ATRAC you can see both front wheels spinning as if I had a front locker. In that situation I don't think it matters much that ATRAC is reactive because all 4 wheels are spinning most of the time. It's not like technical rock crawling. Inside the cab, ATRAC was making a hell of a racket in my ears.

I suspect that not too long into the future that lockers will be a thing of the past. They are very brute force, yet simple, solution to a complicated problem. Technology moves forward.

 

Totally agree. I had an 02' Outback with a manual transmission, and I've never felt that confident driving through heavy snow. I know the Tacoma will handle everything, but the Subaru's limit at which you HAD to start driving more defensively was much, much higher than the Tacoma's. Perhaps that's how it should be as I am older and more mature now. The Subaru AWD system, especially early 2000's was really something special on wet, snow and even ice. The truck is better overall, but I will never forget that sense of confidence in terrible conditions. Only took me about 5 head gasket replacements to come to my senses

 

Nice winter day with snow and freezing rain. 2023 TRD OR DCSB Tacoma (stock tires and suspension) did great again. 4Hi and manually downshift to support brakes or slow down downhill. Awesome vehicle.

RWD is more FUN in the snow but FWD is more controllable. Depends on what you're looking for, commuting to work or proving that you're a weekend warrior. For the record my Tacoma runs perfectly in 4WD in deep snow and gets me up and over the mountains easily...until I run into trouble. Then I'm mighty happy I have a good winch and traction sleds.

Lifted jeep on huge tires rolled right off the road. Many such cases every winter. Road wasn't even that bad, just a bad driver. The driver is lucky he or she rolled between the telephone pole and maples or it could have been a lot worse.

Our awd highlander on blizzaks is phenomenal in the snow and ice. A Tacoma on snows in 4wd would be the go to in a blizzard, but for normal driving where clearance isnt an issue, its hard to beat an AWD SUV.

Yeah, came to say the same thing. I have a Yaris with snow tires and it is OK. Not as good as the Tacoma with snow tires, but capable enough. Almost any soley RWD vehicle is incapable of navigating out of fresh snow, regardless of tires. At least any of the 10 or so I've owned. My Fox body used to be manageable with a few cinderblocks in the truck, but not even close to the FWD cars I've owned.

 

That sword's going to be pretty hard on your seat. Hope you have chainmail seat covers.
