Dream truck. These have to be the best wheelers they ever made. Light and solid front axle.

They're nice little things. Don't think I'd really want to drive one anymore. The handling and behavior is on par with a covered wagon from the Oregon trail. But with some aftermarket leaves springs they do flex pretty good for a leaf truck

Do you have to weld anything to get better flex out of them?

I mean that really short leaf springs so I would move the rear mounts at the very least and I think they make an extension kit to run the stock rear leafs in the front. That helps them a little bit. It's pretty easy to get in over your head kind of quick with those trucks. If you can get better flex and avoid putting tires bigger than 33s on them you'll get the best bang for your buck since the axle in the front is basically a cereal box trinket and bends if you go over a deep enough pothole.

Oh yes. Drowned it in wool wax a while back, tho it’s probably due for some touch up.

Yea I sprayed a couple cans of FF on my frame and tried to spray inside the rails best I could. I’m not sure I got every square inch, but it’s supposed to creep pretty well after spraying. The hardest part is actually the top of the frame.

Oh really? I always heard they were really strong. Hell, even with 31s they can probably kick a lot of ass on trails with that short wheelbase.

Finding an unbent one of those front axles is like trying to find a five leaf clover in a field of blackberry bushes.

Just the housings are kinda weak? My old 98 actually turned out to have a bent rear axle which wore out the tires in 5k miles.

Yeah the housings are weak. You pretty much have to truss them, and if you buy one that someone has already trussed themself you better inspect it really close because welding the truss on improperly will also bend them. The axle shafts themselves are nothing special I don't think anybody really thinks much of them below 35 in tires. Bobby long has been selling long fields for those since the beginning of time so the replacement is well known when you eventually shear off a birfield. I have a bent one of those front axles if you want to sas your truck. Even comes with 4.10 gears already

Hm, maybe a flipped FJ60 axle would be a better option. I haven’t heard of that happening in an 80 series either.

That's one thing I've noticed on every pick up I'd see up for sale; they would truss the front.

At least all of those trucks being wheeled that is.
