I'm not qualified to speculate on the whys & hows of this situation.
However, it's highly unlikely the oil and/or filter were "actually" changed at the intervals the OP paid to have them done.
This is exactly why I will continue to do my own changes, with synthetic oil at 5k intervals.

I'm trying to send a note to the dealer, so at the least they'll know this is what's happening at the lube shop.

I would think the lube shop would be trying to upsell changing an oil filter as often as possible, they do everything else (cabin filter, air filter, etc.)

I don't think that filter has been changed in quite some time, they don't want to drop the cover,it to much trouble for them plus they only have so much time to do the job or thet get shit canned

    WOW, just WOW!!!!

I beg you, please stop trying to save this motor. It has been through too much, top to bottom. call your local salvage yard, they have a nationwide network (with a warranty), search them, find the lowest mileage unit you can, pull the oil filter, pan, and have a look, seal it up, and start doing your own oil and filter changes. Stop the insanity!!! :D Ski

Thats your smoking gun. Its a shame something that takes 3 minutes to change was overlooked and caused this.

you paid for the oil filter but they put that money right back in their pocket. Thats how this works. Canister filters are easy for them to cover up since there is no noticeable visual when they replace it.

Usually the tech has a drawer full of them in his toolbox. They end up for sale to pad his pocket.
Dealership is not likely to invoice a filter and not remove it from inventory imo

No money, all went to truck...
OP, I think this question was not asked yet. Did the truck have an aftermarket intake?

When I saw the sludge, my first thought was K&N filter (especially given the amount of dirt the truck sees).

After catching up at the end here, the question is now, is any air filter in place?

Maybe this is why they call for shorter intervals if driving primarily on dirt roads.

Sorry to see you got screwed over by the Dealer on this one. Yes, I would consider them responsible for the failure. Do I think they will accept the responsibility, if they do this type of work, I don't think they have ethical business practices already... so I doubt it. Should you try to get them to take responsibility... that's your call... I personally would wash my hands of them. Same way I washed my hands of the dealership that did nothing with my truck when I took it for a service...

No one wins getting nasty generally. I think most dealers will look for any way to weasel out of things if they can. I was always nervous when the service waiting room looks nicer than my house - somebody got screwed to pay for that.

No matter, this is my truck, and this is my problem, so I'll do my best to solve it, and share with as many people as possible so they can know what to look out for.

Nope, this a trail rig that just won't die, so our mechanic (who's also a wheeler) helps me keep 'er alive :)

I'd be afraid of the list of "recommended" service Toyota would want to soak me for on this one. I don't want to pay for a new waiting room for them. Next up is an OME lift and 35's. Has factory lockers, gotta love that!

Shouda towed with it. Still would've been ahead on the fuel expenses.
