Hey everyone, looking for some advice or feedback if anyone else has experienced a similar issue. Kind of hard to describe in words but I'll try my best..

I have a 2022 Tacoma SR. I picked it up about 1000 miles ago and ever since I owned it, the brakes felt kinda weird to me. They stop well, but when I'm coming up to a stop (maybe around 50mph and coming up to a stop), slowly pressing the pedal down, it's almost like a weird vibration or shake, VERY Slightly felt in the truck, almost feels like the back. It's not an aggressive shake or anything, don't even feel it in the brake pedal. I'm used to driving Subaru WRX's and cars lower to the ground, more sporty. Is it just because the truck is empty in the back and it has drum brakes? I can't imagine anything being wrong with the brakes this early on, but figured I'd ask. Does anyone else have weird braking in their 3rd gens?

    Thanks!

That sounds like warped front rotors. Sometimes brake dust builds up and creates high/low spots on the rotors. This happens mostly with very conservative drivers who rarely get on the brakes hard. Getting up to 50-60 mph and aggressively braking just short of lockup helps burn this off. It may have to be done several times. While this is more common with front brakes, I suppose it could happen on the rear brakes.

If that doesn't help you may need to have the rotors and or the drums turned or replaced.

I had the same thing that started at 3k miles. Driveline vibrations that was fixed by bring the driveshaft angles into spec - not Toyota’s spec - the manufacturer of the OEM driveline. There is a great thread on it if you do a search.

Here is the TSB for it but Toyota’s fix is hit or miss as many didn’t have success with it. https://www.tacomaworld.com/attachments/t-sb-0124-20-15473-tocoma-1-pdf.4318774/

My 2022 SR5 is doing the same thing. I think it is the front rotors and I'm considering replacing them at 20k miles. I'm pretty easy on brakes. Maybe the rotors are defective for this year.

So I tried slamming on my breaks on a back country road going about 65 to 25 within a second, right before locking them up and making skid marks. Did this a few times and it actually did seem to help the problem, it's still slightly there but maybe I'll give it another go and try again. Overall feels good now, and the truck stops on a dime. Was a previous rental or fleet vehicle, so doubt it has seen too much abuse - probably was used to haul things like furniture in a move and I bet the people were super conservative in the breaking because of that.

See my comment above and give that a shot.

This is your rear drums. It started on my truck after I cleaned the drums and adjusted the parking brake a couple of years ago. Its not gonna kill you or your truck.

Agree its your rear drums. 2022 sport, I had mine resurfaced under warranty at 3k miles. The mechanic wrote that he verified it was the rear by coasting and engaging the parking brake. That caused the vibration so he knew it was the rear. Might be worth trying.

Sounds like the rear drums to me, I think some people had issues with the drums in the past.

thanks everyone. I have an appointment with the dealer on Wednesday the 3rd to adjust my hood since it’s panel gap is off and almost touching my front fender, gonna have them look at the drums in the back while they’re at it

    A little update.

so I went to the dealer today. My fender and hood alignment gap was off so had them fix that and take a look at the brakes. They’re replacing my rear drums for free. It was .0004 out of spec

So another update. New brakes (rear drums) done today. Tech found a TSB and is replacing my rear axle and axle bearing. It’s out of spec really bad. Only one side. He said this should be the fix. The TSB for the rear leaf springs isn’t required (at least for now).

i noticed something similar on my 2019, mainly around 60-65 mph braking going down hills/mountains (mainly noticing it going down Vail pass in colorado in like 2022).

didn't really do anything about it. loaded my truck up for a long trip through oregon (september 2023). braking felt much better with the truck loaded down. i haven't noticed it since.

Really sounds like they are just guessing this is the issue and are finding other stuff . Hopefully it gets resolved . I had slight vibration on my truck had fronts replaced and resurfaced the rotors and cleaned and adjust the rear drums . Much better than it was before but still a slight vibration.i think it’s a characteristic of the truck.

Well to be fair, I brought up a TSB I found for driveshaft vibration when de-accelerating from 10-30mph. The tech said drums first visit after measuring them. Then today when I was in, they did some measurements on a couple other TSB's and they said one of my axles was out of spec. I'll go take a picture of what they found on the paperwork. It's fine with me if they want to keep throwing free parts on my truck, I'll take them lol. Hope the axle fixes it, someone else said something similar - his axle was the problem. Was snowing and icy roads, so I didn't get to test it out - but feels better with new drums already, still there though.

It's not the nature of the truck, well, maybe slightly. Drove other vehicles (many), and something feels off on this.

This is what I experience. Always being fast on the downhill and slight braking.

These trucks do have a slight vibration as coming to a stop buddy. I’ve owned 5 of them. It’s possible your over thinking the nature of the taco if which there is no fix

Maybe, but there are TSB's for this exact reason, and if the dealer wants to keep throwing the parts at it at their expense, fine by me.

So. About to drive it home. Just got back and this is what else has been done, in addition to free new rear drums. Basically got a free drain and fill in the process too
