    Did you RTFM?

It usually says something like run the engine, shut it off, pull dipstick, wipe clean, wait 5 minutes, then insert. One side should get a decent reading. Pulling the stick smears oil up the shaft, hence the waiting. Warm oil will also drain down better. You can rough up the end of the dipstick with some sand paper for better reading of that water like 0w20.

In changing oil, I have never simply added back the capacity specified in the manual. Generally, one quart less than spec’s, then add enough to bring up to full after running the engine for a couple of minutes.

remove your dipstick. Let the engine sit for an hour. Reinstall your dipstick and check your oil. You’ll get much better reading.

If you don’t want to leave your lipstick out for an hour, try this. Check the oil level before you start in the morning or after it has sat for 4-5 hours.

Their process allows the oil to completely drain from the dipstick tube. This eliminates the smear that is often on the stick

you put in too much oil. as someone else posted, not all of the oil drains out. there is no need to put in more than 6 quarts. it will read full or darn close enough afterwards.

You are fine, It's just the Amsoil. The Amsoil hydrocarbon molecules are fatter than regular synthetic oil molecules and thus take up more room in the oil pan. It gives the illusion that you have added too much oil.

I'm always 6 qts and go kinda guy. I don't even check the dipstick TBH after the change cause its pretty routine for me. I'll just check it maybe in a week or 2 just for my peace of mind, but its usually close to the top or maybe a little short but doesn't hurt my feelings.

I'm no expert, but sounds to me like you drove about 8k miles with at least 1 quart of oil extra than you needed. Explains the burning oil smell. Explains the extra oil on dipstick. Do an oil change, don't worry about measuring how much comes out, bc you've already got too much in; fill it back up with 5 quarts; check dipstick and adjust accordingly if needed.

To make it easier to read scuff up between the low/full marks with sandpaper, file, etc. Your dragging oil up the tube. pull stick out/wait a few minutes, reinsert... pull out and check level.

As silly as some questions are in posts, they could be valid.

    1. How do you know 6qts are being drained? Could be plugged after a few quarts draining or gets clogged. That measure bucket in prior post would be a great sanity check
    2. Rough up dipstick, check after running, do a drain back wait of 5 to 10 mins
    3. Change oil and filter and measure your output
    4. Add 6qts and check oil dipstick from #1 an #2

The wrong dipstick # was a new one on me but could be possible? My friend had his transmission drained instead of crankcase oil at a reputable garage so it does happen. How?
