Good morning fellow cold people.

Driving my truck in the AM before the sun came up, I heard all kinds of creaks and cracks I’ve never heard before

For tomorrow, my kid was saying he needs a new sled.

He has a few of the cheaper ones, I’m going to coat the bottom of one in spray silicone and the other with wd40. Maybe that’ll help him go faster!

What size winch does everyone have? I am looking but I am pretty green on this. My purpose will be mostly weekend camping and trails to get to camping sites. I will take the easy way around obstacles...I have nothing to prove and would rather fix crap less often. So mostly self recovery or a buddy. Not planning on a lot of mud. I do have a snatch block as well.

I have an OpenRoad 13,000#. I went with the biggest I could afford (that'swhatshesaid) because the weight of a stuck rig is not set; the ground can add, essentially, weight (think mud, etc, caked up around a truck/frame, etc). Also synthetic line and soft-shackles are fantastic.

 

Dang 13k# is big! Here I was considering a 8k or 10k.

 

It's not much more cost - but remember, the rated weight is only at the very end of the line; so it's 13k with 1 spool of line around the drum; as the winch winds, it's pulling power reduces. So it's 13k until after the first spool - until the drum has it's first layer, then by the time I have like 3-4 winds back into the winch, the pulling power may be only 50% of the max rated value.

 

I thought it was the opposite, that you needed at least a wrap around the barrel to get the most pulling power. Why would wrapping it reduce the rating?

 

It's rated it's highest at one spool/wrap, and the "pulling power" goes down from there. I think it's a diameter thing...There's some physics involved which I am not educated enough to explain, but am good-enough to repeat w/o explanation
