New Falken Wildpeak AT4W ????

I don't understand why they've made this series tire so heavy. I'm sure it has to do with the material and durability, but as an A/T tire, weight should be a priority in my opinion. Probably 95% of the people using A/Ts have them on daily drivers. Maybe I'm missing something here.

 

Good info! I too have the 255 G003s and was eyeing these - discouraging they are that heavy, but it is a deceivingly high amount of rubber I guess.

 

From what I’ve read, that specific size and load rating is extra heavy because it is used as the OE tire on Jeep Gladiators. So the tire has to meet higher safety standards thus requiring more material to be used in construction the tire.

 

Didnt know they were making them in this size yet. My AT 3/w’s still have 40K more miles but these look good.

 

So! I was SUPPOSED to have the new WildPeak AT4/w’s put on my truck yesterday!! But the guys from RSG OffRoad in Lakewood, CO said that the tires were SOOOO bad that they couldn’t get them to balance properly (at all!) and they talked me into just going with the older AT3/w’s… so, although my ride looks like a brand new truck with my 3” lift, shocks and new wheels, I can’t help but be slightly disappointed to not be riding on Falken’s latest (but not greatest) :-/

 

Maybe they're not the latest and greatest after all. I mean they're very heavy for what they are, and you've already had issues with balancing. I quickly went from being excited about these to already have moved on from them.

 

same. i was ok with the at3. didnt get stuck with them. ill stick with them again.

 

I second this. Anything over 55 lbs is too much for these trucks.

 

You running E load tires?

 

I think I recall there being balancing issues with the wildpeak early on too. Those got sorted out, but it built them a little bit of a reputation unfortunately.

 

Especially on stock gearing.

 

I got my AT4Ws slapped on this morning. No issues with balancing any of the 5 I got. I went with the 275/70/17 C-Load (58 lbs) coming from a 265/70/17 SL AT3W (46.5 lbs). I've thoroughly tested them in the 14 miles I've driven since getting them put on..JK, but we do still have quite a bit of snow and ice since it's been brutally cold here and I'm sure my MPG will go from disappointing to slightly more disappointing with the extra weight.

My AT3Ws had 26k on them so some of the things I noticed might be due to that, granted I've had quite a few sets of the AT3Ws over the years so I'm very familiar with how they feel brand new. The AT4Ws seem to be just as quiet on road but do feel a little more cushy despite going from SL to C-Load. Stopping on ice or compacted snow feels quite a bit better and I definitely had more traction driving through a partially muddy/partially frozen field with about 4"-6" of snow and plenty of larger drifts. If my anecdotal, 14 mile experience holds, they should be a bit better than the AT3W and at least 1,001 x better than the K02 in anything that's not completely dry. The change in compound was my biggest concern...thinking it'd make these Falken's version of the K02 but that concern is gone.

I wonder if you're right about it being only on the SL version of the tires it seems like those are the only ones that have had it so far.

 

Had the a/t4w mounted! Definitely some rubbing with the 0 offset wheels. I took a heat gun to the fender liners and it is much better but still some minor rubbing. Looks like a lift is in the near future.

 

Awesome! I had to go back to your older posts to remember if you’re the one who ordered the 255’s. They don’t even look like skinnies in the picture, I’m sure it’s just the angle or lighting.

Nope, tire shop had them mounted an hour after I dropped it off. I agree they look nice for being skinnies.

 

I’m glad to hear that. Thanks for posting the pics and info. I’m one step closer to pulling the trigger now that I can see the 255’s look great mounted.

What tire size/rating did you have before?

I’d be interested to hear if the truck feels sluggish with the 58 pounds at each corner. I feel like the C load rating (instead of traditional E for that size) and the skinniness might offset the negative effects of the weight.

 

I did notice that i have to hold gears for a second longer, my taco is a stick. My old wheels and tires were just the stock ones. It also feels a little stiffer and there is more feedback while cruising the highway, but the shop filled them up to 40psi, I’m going to drop that down a bit.

 

Gotcha, so it sounds like it isn’t a crazy difference. Yeah 40 seems a bit high. I usually run my E rated tires around 36-38psi and have been happy. Different load rating though.
