4th Gen Tacoma (2024+)

I agree. I was more so referring to the argument about the car reliability data discussion. I don't think people who disagree on fundamental issues (whether the articles shared are reliable/valid data) are going to find common ground in the discussion. I think its a lost cause for both sides. Just stating that both sides bring good points to the discussion, and neither are recognizing it. Data is good. Skepticism of data is good. Arguing either extreme is bad.

 

You can look at the data, personal experience and preferences.

My ‘85 4Runner had the engine seized at 125K,

The ‘92 needed a clutch at 100K, it should go to at least 200-250K, bought that used, previous owner apparently abused it, lots of little issues with that truck because of neglect.

‘99 needs a timing belt/water pump every 90K miles. Have a very long list of repairs with that truck, still have it and put a new engine it over last summer.

Will my ‘21 be reliable, or give me trouble who knows? Regular maintenance costed me $1166.13 last year. Drive 20K/year so my costs might be higher than some others.

At the end of the day it is all relative, even with all the trouble they have given me over the years I buy Toyotas simply because I like them, but I could be swayed to another brand. As they all are simply inanimate objects, may give a person joy, or grief. All depends how you look at.

Think people just like to argue with one another, or forums like these wouldn’t exist. Have worked with the public for the last 30 years or so, what I have learned is, everyone hates everybody else…and we love to tell the other guy is wrong for their views on life. The number one complaint I hear from people is, (wait for it….) other people.

I am basically here for the shit show, (sometimes I say shit just to see a persons reaction) so there is that…

 

Not to perseverate on the GX 550, but I wonder how it compares to the G4 Tac in terms of value and bang-for-the-buck.

But is the Japan built 3.4 not the Tex/Mex one. The Japanese built LCs and Lexus using the 3.4 have had zero problems.

It makes more power without the need of a hybrid, so that is one point.

Nicer interior, but that is personal preference.

Also better brand social status, the $60K+ Tacoma is still just a “Toyota”. Someone once said (a female) you can have the nicest most expensive F150 out there, but it is still a F150. Believe the Tacoma falls into that category. She sounded high maintenance, which in turn, no matter how beautiful she is, some guy is tired of her shit.

Guessing why the Land Cruiser 100-200 no matter how optioned out it was, never really achieved perceived socioeconomic status quo, like a Land Rover, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, etc simply because it was a lowly Toyota usually owned by the commoners.

 

What did you spend $1166 on?

 

Since it is a luxury SUV vs a truck, I think they are too different to compare in that manner without being subjective. The bed might be valuable to one buyer, and the larger interior space preferable to another.

I'd love the GX, but there is a $10K premium over the Limited Tacoma just to get into one so I don't see it being a better bang for the buck at all.

No the base GX550 is 10k more expensive than a Tacoma Limited. I guess if someone had enough cash laying around that wouldn't be awful

 

This is the Tacoma versus 4Runner argument. It usually boils down to your needs.

When you start comparing SUVs, you can throw logic out the window. There is something for everyone, and where I live, you see them all.

People buy Lamborghini suvs. Really? There are several around me in a variety of flashy colors.

 

Yeah, but when you are getting your Lexi serviced you have a much nicer lounge with gourmet coffee and an ice cream parlour.

 

Many good points here, but I don't think the Lexus brand carries the same "douche-brag" rights that it used to. They are not the executive-class vehicles that they were 15+ years ago. The brand has become Opra'd ("You get a Lexus! ...and you get a Lexus! ...and there's even a watered-down model for you, too!").

 

The OverTrail (non-plus) isn't that much more than a Pro.

 

A DCSB Tacoma just has an open air trunk, and the Land Cruiser doesn’t. Both can do the same job at hand just slightly differently. The Tacoma will just get your gear dirtier faster, unless you toss on a topper.

Given the choice, the Lexus would get my money hands down over a high trim Tacoma. Better towing too. 6780-8000 lbs vs the Tacoma’s 6000-6500.

Yeah still don’t think it carries the same status quo as those others. Don’t think I have ever heard any rap songs written about a Lexus signifying that they “made it!” Lol! More of an old man/woman vehicle much like a Volvo. Think I see more old women driving Lexus’s than any other demographic. If I was into the whole status quo thing, probably wouldn’t buy a Lexus either. But alas I am just a dirt bag knuckle dragger that likes the poverty trim models… lol!

 

No sweat. Time’s on your side and you already have a nice Tacoma.

If you currently own any gen of Tacoma, you’ll be asked to pay too much for their truck and give them your truck for a handful of beans. Overpaying, and giving away something of significant value is crazy from both ends.

When they run out of the first-timers & easy scores (who knows how many people will wait in line for $50k+ Tacomas..), the lots will fill up and negotiating is possible.

 

How many miles do you have in your 21 so far?

 

Just rolled 45K. Did most of the major services already. Doing the power steering and brake system service next oil change which is next week or so. Unsure if I am keeping this truck long term, but treating it as such. By reading a lot of threads in the 3rd Gen section, many scoff at the major services and don’t do them. Not me.

Used to do all that stuff myself, but now don’t mind paying the stealership. Saves me from crawling around on the ground, kinda over all that stuff.

 

Very true. I think that may be a problem with Toyotas sky rocketing prices. They seem to be pricing the new Toyotas like they are Lexus’s.
