Understanding Winch Load Capacity

Winch capacity can be confusing because it changes as the winch unwinds. When the line is mostly unspooled, with just one layer of cable left on the drum, the winch is at its highest capacity, which is also called the first-layer load capacity. As the cable winds on the drum, the capacity gets lower until the cable is fully wound. This is called the fully wound load capacity.

A rule of thumb to figure out the minimum size of the winch you’ll need is to multiply the gross weight of the heaviest object you plan to pull by 1.5.

For example, if you plan to pull a 1,000-pound load, you’ll need a winch with a minimum of 1,500 pounds of load capacity. But keep in mind that there are many variables associated with winching, so it’s a good idea to consult with the manufacturer to verify the proper winch size for your intended application.

Ohhhh ok, I see what you're saying. If the winch is driven from the center, then the more wraps you have increases your distance from the center of that axis. The further you move from the axis, the more you decrease the torque efficiency. It's like using a yard bar or a lever, the further you are from the fulcrum, the more advantage you have, but in that analogy the wraps increase the distance and give the mechanical advantage to the load over the barrel.

 

That's exactly what I was implying. Well-done, sir.

 

Initially I had confused that with needing that first wrap around the barrel.

But I told her that I’m not touching a thing until it stops!

 

Right?!

I told mine I’ll probably go out around 3-4 if it’s not stopped so at least there is light. No use doing it earlier than that.

 

12 noon Friday January 19th in southern Howard County and I have an honest 5” - 5.5”. Looks like I’m pulling out the snowblower for the first time in 3 years.

 

This is what im doing....hoping to finish up work a little early so I can get the 4 wheeler out and go play for a bit too...

 

It’s going to be in the 50’s next Friday tell her you’re going to wait.

 

I am the snowblower here, so nothing is getting shoveled today. I'm still sore from Tuesday!

 

Weather channel says it’s going to be 50+ next Thursday-Friday. Good things come to those who wait.
