I am the same way. I used to do a lot of work downtown. I am glad those days are behind me.

With good reason! While I still feel safe in Madison, it has definitely taken a turn for the worse in recent decades. I'm looking forward to moving away when I retire.

I'm perfectly happy living in the country.
Heck, one of the reasons I work 2nd shift is that I don't have to deal with lots of people in the stores or on the road. And that's in Fond du Lac.

Cabela's doesn't allow fishing in their tanks either.

    Just saying.

Madison is no longer the sleepy little town that it once was, sadly.

They have destroyed State Street with all the high rise buildings. It's mostly unrecognizable now. Madison is rapidly becoming yet another generic big city, with all the trouble that comes with it.

We got sent on Chicago once and they insisted on booking the hotel for us. They found the cheapest hotel on the south side they could…. I was like yeah, thats not happening and sent them screenshots of the reviews. They ended up cancelling and booking a different one. The crew I was with wasnt sold on the idea of starting early and getting back to the hotel before dark until about the first day and then they understood.

I used to go there about once a month, drive there wasn’t bad but you’d spend just as long actually trying to get through the city as you did driving across the rest of the state. Dont really miss those trips any more… or the astronomical price of parking lol there was once i just kept the car at the hotel and took Uber cuz it was far cheaper and easier than finding and paying for parking again.

Toughness aside, I wasn't entirely aware of how bad the neighborhood is. lol
Like he said to me. One white guy wandering around alone in that neighborhood....everyone probably thought I was a cop.

It's better not to travel alone.

Can someone tell me how to get ahold of a moderator on TW (besides a racist tirade)? I would like to get a page open (like @LarryDangerfield has with his UP one) for the upcoming Arkansas trip. I have responded to one and no reply. Responded to another and no reply. WTH???

Personally I don't mind Downtown Milwaukee. At least during the hours I keep. I've spent many hours wandering around with my camera gear in a back pack. Like @wi_taco says situational awareness, and looking like you belong are key. I find that a good helping of F' you side eye goes a long way.

I figure if I see college kids jogging in the area I am in that's a good sign it's ok.

I do miss the walkability and bikeability of the city. Out where I am you are going nowhere without a car or at lease a decent bike ride.
