New to 4x4

So... quick newbie question: Stoked that it was snowing pretty good and eager to use 4x4 I engaged H4. I drove home around 4mi and it turned out that the roads were just wet and a little slushy (not a straight road). I now know that this was not the right conditions for H4. I'm hoping I didn't damage the vehicle? Can this short distance on a new vehicle screw up my new truck? Stoked on the new ride but feel a little stupid. Thanks.

 

na you didnt mess anything up in that short distance, but dont do it unless you need it cause you do it enough and yeah, you'll destroy your truck

 

sounds like your alright. you'd know it if you broke something or hurt something...would've made a very loud noise

You're probably fine . If the wheels can slide , like on slush , you are OK .

No dry pavement though , I don't care what anybody else says .

 

Yeah, read the link in your sig, freaked me out. All my off road buddies have full time 4X and I just wasn't thinking. Can't wait to finally follow up the limitless trails out my back door instead of just being a passenger.

 

it's so much more fun doing it yourself and in your own vehicle! have fun with it...just not on the pavement, lol

 

New questions but toyota recommends driving with 4wd engaged once a month to ensure everything stays lubed. What did they have in mind for people that live around pavement as far as the eye can see?

 

As long as you didn't make any sharp turns that resulted in the truck acting like it was binding up and making bad noises you should be ok.

 

Nixinus, Just do it on the highway. Shift into H4 on the on-ramp, drive 10 or so miles on the straight away. No problems.

 

Just use it when you need it and when conditions allow it. I don't care what other say, 4wd on dry pavement is not a good idea and is just asking for something to go wrong. Mine hardley gets used from April to November except for occassional projects around the house. No where near 10 miles a month, some engineer just got a little over excited when he wrote that in the owner's manual.

 

Thanks for the input guys. I have been using it on ice this winter when im up in the mountains but I know socal is going to be back to its usual dry weather here in a minute.

 

go find a gravel or dirt road to do the 10mi once a month. It seems overkill to me that they recommend 10mi every month.

 

4wd 10 miles a month that's what i tell my girl every time I go wheelin " I'm just doing with the manual says to do once a month it's preventive maintenance and it has to be done "
