i just realized what a PITA changing the oil is on these. Is there any normal filters we can use instead of having to disassemble the filter?

Baxter makes an adapter, it’s like $250
    I had one, sold it
My dealer stated they would not warranty any engine issue related to oil system with that installed. Wasn’t worth it to me.

The factory filter is a breeze with the right tools. Less of a mess than the spin on you want to use

yeah, I'd just get a proper canister tool and get used to it. It's actually a good setup and easy,, just different for some, but nothing we can't learn in one pass.

The baxter one looks neat, but $250 is a lot of money for something that will save me minutes of work a couple times a year. I'd rather spend $250 on an amazing bottle of Scotch to crack open every time I change my oil. What I really miss is my 2nd gen filter on the topside of the engine bay.

Just get an aluminum housing for the factory filter and keep the plastic one as a spare.

It’s highly recommended to stick with the OEM filter setup. If you drain it prior to removing the filter housing it shouldn’t be messy.

I honestly have no issue with the oil filter, maybe because it reminds me of the similar setup on the old Japanese motorcycles I had.
Use the right tools and follow the procedure, it's really not a bad setup. Use a Toyota filter, they're cheap enough.

The biggest pain in the rear has been the splash shield bolts, I'm pretty sure the damn thing hadn't been removed on a number of the Toyota provided oil changes, bolts were rusted and one was seized, what a pain. Jerks. Liberal application of anti-seize is key. This is why I do it myself now.

And the engine is so far off the damn ground compared to my cars, it blows the oil away from the drain pan if it's breezy, and it always seems to be breezy as soon as the drain plug comes out. I think I want to get a Fumoto just so I can stick a hose on it and run it right into the drain pan.

i think you're doing it wrong.

oem/stock, i can change my filter with a high dollar suit on without issue. with the fumoto valve, i can do the same thing with my oil pan as well.

    i use this kit
    https://www.amazon.com/Motivx-Tools-Filter-Wrench-Advanced/dp/B0791MWXDC

the tube and thread on insert is used to remove oil from the filter(after the oil is drained out of the oil pan), then the wrench is used to remove the housing, and later used to reinstall the housing.

following that method, and using the drain tube, it's extremely easy to drain the entire remnants of oil in the filter straight into the catch pan, preventing any splash. by the time it comes to removing the canister, all that must be removed is an oil-saturated filter. cleanup is easily done with a few paper towels.

Re: "breezy..." Yes! this happens to me about 50% of the time: pan (big one) drain hole directly under the flow coming out and it seems all fine until near the end when you're in the final "thread" flow phase.... then here comes the breeze and winds and it blows the oil all over the place outside of the pan and makes a mess.

OH: And if you put a big cardboard piece under the pan (pizza box) you'll just get stronger winds: :annoyed: ....don't do it. I swear if I were to put a layer of speedy-dry all around the pan, it would trigger thunderstorms with even higher wind gusts. Being up on ramps in the front makes it even worse.

I used a box from a 50" TV last time, it still managed to blow onto the driveway. I hate oil spots on the driveway, but an application of kitty litter and then scrubbing with some Simple Green mitigated the disaster :bananadance:.

I might find the filter to be different, but pain in the ass? No. It took one change to get the hang of it. And now, believe it or not, I actually like it better than the spin-on.

The other car is a spin on. It's the lack of hand space, the inability to get a legit wrench up there to loosen it... Now that's a pain in the ass. At least with ours there are facets for the tool to grip onto. I don't need to reach. The socket extension does the reaching for me.

    Shits easy, yo.
