So what's the deal here if I put 1000lbs in the bed of my truck how much tow do I lose? I'm about to tow my truck full and a 6x 12 foot U-Haul trailer full of stuff about 1700kilometers in the winter .
Back of truck has deep freezer with about 50 lbs of meat . Lawn mower 2 truck batteries a chop saw and two totes and two 25 lb dumbbells

Trailer has washer dryer 2 couches and two beds among some other heavy things

I'm trying to find the time to install my p3 controller before I go but trailer is loaded already so not sure how accurate my tuning of it will be. Def got some squat to her though I hope it makes it. I drove it about 25 kms today and it felt fine. There is snow and ice I'm headed from BC to Alberta I have BFG ko2 on

I have no idea what you are asking, but I sure want to see the responses. Pictures would be awesome! I would love to see a vehicle towing a truck that's towing a trailer in the snow towing more stuff than I have in my garage.

    Guessing you may be over

You misread I'm not towing a truck I'm towing with my Tacoma ... I know the door jamb has my max limits but I've read alot of conflicting answers when it comes to loading both down and I guess I'm unsure how to calculate what my tongue weight is but I have no access to scales here until I'm already well underway on the road

Tongue weight should be 10-15% of the gross trailer weight. Say the trailer is 2500 lbs. (Which is a low estimate) and you have an appropriate 12% tongue weight of 300 lbs.

That 300 lbs. counts against your payload on your door jamb. So, with 1000 lbs. In the bed you add that 300 for the tongue and you need to have enough payload for yourself, all passengers, and any and all mods/add-ons you've put in the truck. That includes heavier wheels/tires, bed liner, floor mats, etc. It all counts against your payload.

So, unless your truck has 1500 lbs. of payload, your truck has zero mods, and you and your passengers and all the stuff in the cab weighs less than 200 lbs. I am gonna say you're likely over payload.

Not a good idea. Will you die, or crash? Maybe not, but it's definitely not recommended.

Ideally when towing a heavy trailer, you want the majority of the load carried by the trailer, and just the tongue weight on the truck. Your 1000 lbs in the bed means you can't tow anything, if you go by the book.

I've done some stupid stuff, but not sure I'd attempt this in winter. If you must, I'd be going real slow, staying off the interstate if possible. If you hit the brakes hard, it's almost guaranteed you'll lose control if it's slippery.

Finally, the UHaul trailer has hydraulic brakes. Your controller won't do anything.

Rereading the first post, and assuming the trailer is full, I'd move a couch or something light to the truck bed, then move all the other stuff to the trailer.

Did you get your fuel issues resolved? I saw you had another thread on that.

    That's the correct answer.

There are four magic numbers to keep in your head.

Tow capacity - ~6500 lbs including trailer, depending on trim, bed, and drivetrain. Check your sticker. It can be anywhere between 6400-6700.

Hitch weight/tongue weight - should not exceed 650 pounds or 10% of your tow rating, including the hardware between tongue and receiver. That's easy enough to do.

Payload - it's on your sticker, usually between 900 and 1300 pounds, trim and accessory dependent.

GCWR - 11360 pounds, fixed for all models. All other ratings are derived from GCVR - curb weight OR GCVR - GVWR. Total weight cannot exceed the sum of the truck's gross weight rating (GVWR) + tow capacity. One of the numbers above is way off if this number is exceeded.

    So let's do math.

The UHaul 6x12 is 1960 empty, 4400 GVWR. Well within tow capacity. Take 1960 plus the cargo weight, and then take 15% of that. That'll be the ballpark of your tongue weight. Say you max out the trailer. 2440 pounds of cargo. That's 4400 pounds trailer weight x 0.15 = 660 pounds hitch weight. A wee heavy. Need to be 70 pounds lighter in the trailer, so we're at 2370 lbs cargo now.

That's 650 pounds hitch weight. Now, take your payload sticker, minus hitch weight, minus passengers. Say you have 1100 pounds, typical for a double cab. You're pulling a trailer and you have 200 pounds of meat wearing seatbelts. You are allowed 250 pounds of cargo in the bed.

2370 pounds trailer + 250 pounds truck.. 2600 pounds of total junk can be moved with that configuration. That's it.

Not very much, is it? So now your options are to completely ignore the ratings and send it, or upgrade to a box truck and car hauler.

Me personally, if I'm moving more than a 6x12 can handle, I'd box truck it. You do you. Good luck with the move.

MOST Tacoma's have 900-1200 lbs payload. It is printed on a sticker on the door jamb. It varies by the individual truck. If you put 1000 lbs in the bed you can't pull any trailer and stay within your payload specs. You also have to consider the weight of the driver a passenger if there is one and any other cargo.

Put as much weight as possible in the trailer and as little as possible in the truck.

It's funny how often I forget about the box trucks and car hauler option. Much better option, especially if OP has phantom engine issues already.

Rock Lobsters post (see # 10) is the best answer you will get.

I've done some sketchy / questionable things in my last 36 years of driving, but I personally would definitely NOT attempt to tow what you are describing with that truck you have.

Box truck and car hauler is 2700$ plus fuel plus tax
6x12. Was 2000$ but was able to get it for 160$ because I know the guy here and he was able to swing a deal on the trailer but can't on the trucks.....

So if I have 1000lbs in the bed I can't tow anything is that what I understand? I figured I would want weight in the back of my truck...

This is the configuration that makes sense with the weather I can't put a 6000+$ couch in the back of my Tacoma 1 it's a 5 peice sectional so it doesn't fit....

So 5.5 foot deep freezer two guys to lift into my truck lawn mower chop saw and a few totes of food and myself ....

Trailer from tounge to door is washer dryer coffee table and big JBL speaker right up against the front. Then came.in the lights couches and the couches alone were 6x3 so took up alot of the trailer then there's a bycicle .

Look on your dor jamb. What is your payload.

If you, plus any passenger, gear, and mods and the 1000 lbs. Eats up all your payload then you have nothing left to accommodate the tongue weight of a trailer.

So I found an article that says this... Do I have to take the weight with everything out of my box or should I do this step while my.truck is loaded?
