Steering Wheel Wrap Glue

On a 3rd gen TRD OR, the steering wheel has the rich Corinthian wrap at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.

When I drive with my hand at the 9 o'clock, my finger tips touch the back side of the wrap, and I have noticed, whatever glue/adhesive Toyota used, is letting go.

I have 4000 miles on my 2023 and don't really want to drive almost two hours to the dealership to replace my whole steering wheel.

Does anyone out there know what type of adhesive is used for holding the pleather whap on? Seems like I can inject some in there and clamp it and be done.

Any help would be great

 

Dont do it, they will deny warranty if it gets worse. I know its annoying but start with photos of the lift and simply complain about it until its replaced. They are quite pricey.

New truck and you can't be bothered to spend the time and effort to get it repaired properly under warranty ?
My guess is no glue was used to attach leather cover. All one piece, just placed then stitched.

Oy veh! If it were mine, I'd put a dab of E6000 on it and call it a day.

 

So imagine while you are driving and the you are gripping your steering wheel with your finger tips at the 9 o'clock position. If I squeeze it down, it actually stays stuck to the steering wheel for a short period, but then lets go. So I don't believe it's a stitching issue, just an adhesive.

I am all for having things taken care of under warranty, but it's a 2 hour drive there for them to inspect it as I take a day off from work, then send me home saying they will order the part and then call me saying they can do it on another day off I have to take. So four hour's of drive time alone there and back on icy Montana roads, and another four plus, not including the time I will be twiddling my thumbs because because the closest place to go is a 5 mile walk in -20 degree weather while they install it. I could wait for spring, but that's two days and eight hours of drive time. If I can use a adhesive to fix a very very small issue, I am willing to do that.

If one was close and I could not have to take days off, it would be in the shop.

 

I know, I had thought of that, but if some upholstery master 5000 could point me in the right direction I would take it. If not, it's going to the dealership. And I can just hear them say..... Oh that's normal, it's supposed to do that and then have to put a service tech in a trash can on shear principal.

So we shall see, I really don't want to mess up my new truck, but if I can find an easy fix, I might take it

 

Look at 3m's line of adhesives. I've used them in the past for interior projects with excellent results.

See if you can work with them to send pics of the current failure so you don't have to make two trips and thus save 4+ hours on the road. Maybe you can set up a Zoom meeting with them using your phone camera. It's a reasonable request especially in the winter in MONTANA!! (I had the extreme privilege of driving through Montana in the '80's on the ultimate road-trip on the northern route (mostly I90) when my little brother was moving to California from New England. Magnificent and
-vast- ! so I understand what you are saying. Talk to them now, send pics and get it fixed when the weather turns more reasonable.

I would not try to fix it yourself with glue. You only have 4,000 miles on basically a brand-new truck. "You made it worse" will be the words you might hear when they see it: then "Poof" goes the warranty on that part. If you delay this and it fails totally you may be on the hook for a -very- expensive steering wheel. Dunno if things have changed, but at one point you were protected from the time/date/mileage that you first reported an issue. In other words: if you report it today and if it takes them 12 months and thousands of miles to get the part and you exceed the warranty terms somehow: you're still covered. Confirm this with them.

Call Toyota Customer Assistance if they give you a hard time. Good luck! Keep us posted how it goes.

I do run the online meetings for my work, I wonder if that would be an option. They practically sold the truck to me over text messages. Yeah the 4k miles and the little thing's are eating at me, plus I remembered I do need to have the driver side wind TSB taken care of. Wonder if I can record it on the phone as well.
