No one is forcibly injecting 5G microchips in you if you buy a 4th gen.

I towed a Sabb before, a real Sabb 9-3 or 9-5 thing cought on fire two blocks from the owners house. Was it electical, did oil leak all over the hot turbo? IDK? Pretty sure it was after a snow or some winter precipitation accumulation, becasuse I towed the burnt up Sabb to their driveway and it was a PIA.

Luckily no NA vehicle has ever caught fire so you’re safe

Why do you have to resort to name calling?

Anyways, I’m bored and looking at an Army Green Double cab Tundra now. Probably the same interior room in the back with an extra foot of bed and more power. Plus it has that unreliable turbo!

That would be 15 years of ownership for me, which is pretty dang good. Beyond what that average person does, unless you’re Taco Buffer and floats about in the winds of fashion. :)

Do think the legendary 500K-1 million mile days are over, which were rare to begin with. Makes good stories though. One of the “legendary” 22Rs I owned only made it to 125K.

Probably could have gotten my 1st Gen’s 435K engine to 500K if I just did the heads, didn’t trust doing all the work then have the bottom end go with all those miles on it.

I muted like six months ago with the hourly to daily posting about how he wasn’t buying a 4th Gen. I figured by now we’d be over that, but I guess needing to constantly reminding people he isn’t buying one hasn’t gone out of style.

Maybe I’ll go join a Ford forum and post daily about never owning one.

By the time you have so many miles on the engine that it is a concern, the suspension, interior, paint, and well, everything will be worn out. Not to mention it won't have all of the common convenience features newer cars have. Why focus just on the engine? With the exception of SG, who's driving a 20+ year truck as a DD?

Of course. The Subaru WRX is the perfect example of this. The WRX has a turbo engine, the Impreza, Legacy, Outback, Forester had a similar naturally aspirated engine. Take a guess which motors go boom first.

The one drawn towards 22 year olds who don’t maintain their car and redline it at every chance.

that’s not the motor’s fault. You could get the same motor in the legacy, Outback, and Forster btw

What was the fate of the XT motors?
You guys are very sensitive. I don’t even remember what started this latest round of turbo discussions. This has to be round ten of the same shit. I think I just responded to a post that longevity will suffer with the new engine. I guess that triggers a lot of you?

One way to look at it is this: If you don't like small displacement turbos and eventually, electric, then buy a horse because at some point soon (enough) that's going to be about your only other option.

My Volvo turbo went well over 200K miles without any turbo issues. The car got old and passed it along to a new owner. Did swap in a scrap yard transmission after the radiator rotted out and ATF mixed with engine coolant. Also had a few flat tires and had to replace fuel pump. I doubt any car turbo will see a load like a truck towing 3 tons. Same as you, I have no direct evidence at all of a bad turbo. But, I still do feel more comfortable with NA engines in a truck. It's not a big enough issue for me to not consider a turbo truck. Choices.

Hello everyone. I've lurked on this thread for nearly 3 months so I think it's about time I made an account haha. I'm currently in a '16 JKU, looking to get into a Taco after years of jealousy (lol). I'm leaning towards a later year 3rd gen but holding off till 4th gens really start to hit the lots to see what happens. I really like the changes Toyota made on the 4th gen but very likely won't be able to stomach the price for the trim I want (TRD OR).

2022's and 2023's can be had for mid-$30k (midwest) with less than 20k miles, so hardly even used imo. I understand that's close to their MSRP when brand new but, when 4th gen TRDOR's start mid-$40's and quickly go higher, financially it seems like an easier decision to stick with the proven 3rd gens.

Anyways, figured I'd say hello and share my current thought process. Nothing new to the discussion but when a thread is over 1k pages it makes it hard to be unique!

Shoot…I am not even DD my ‘99. :) My wife is, but her commute is only 3/4s of mile, she could use an electric golf cart if she wanted. Ha! I don’t trust that truck to leave town without having to being towed back. Other parts failing rather than the engine that is.

Yep, lots of other parts around the engine will fail long before it does. Generally speaking Toyotas will start nickel and diming you around the 200K mark. Some sooner, but usually repairs are under $1500, which isn’t bad in the big scheme of things. My 1st Gen was costing me on average $1000/year to keep it on the road, not terrible. My 3rd Gen last year was $1100 and some change just for service to put in some perspective. I also don’t do my own work anymore either, sure is nice.

It only left me stranded twice, once a dead battery, (not Toyotas fault) which I could bump start, the other a failed fuel pump, both close to home.
