I cannot like your post but I can hope that you be able to find something that works for you. I am sure you are leaning heavily on the "local" who sent the message.

    Wow, that sucks.

Depending on how large an area that affects, there will likely be some longer term tourism fallout as well. Also not good for the local population.

I hope you find a good solution.

You'll be surprised at how easy it is to replace your own garage door springs. I went through this website and ordered a pair along with new cables and turn bars. It is imperative that you use the proper turn bars and not rebar. If I remember correctly, it was like 28 to 34 quarter turns on the spring to preload the door and it works flawlessly. A lot cheaper than paying someone else to do it. The cables sucked to replace only because I have shelving that doesn't give any room to get behind it to get access to one of the bolts but all in all, it wasn't difficult. That site has videos on how to measure for the correct replacement spring and videos on how to install safely. Just make sure you have the correct bars and you'll be fine.

I had to fix one of mine on the shop when we moved in. I used two 3/8" extensions to wind the spring and a youtube video for instructions on the correct amount of tension. Been working great for a few months.

With these low unexpected temperatures your not going to be the only one.

I wonder how many engine blocks cracked?

A buddy of mines uncle moved here from Michigan years ago, that summer he didn't drain all the water out of his inboard engine on his boat. That winter it froze and busted. He ask me if I could weld it back together

He also said he didn't think it got that cold here

I was going to comment that I used ⅜" extensions too. For once I read far enough to see your comment before I did. They worked well for me.

Back in the fall I commented to my youngest that a machete would be nice for clearing brush on and around trails to my deer stands. He went and got this, it was given to him 10+ years ago by a friend of mine that was cleaning out some stuff, and thought a 12 year old might enjoy it. Fast forward another 12 years...

I used it a bit in the fall, but found the handle was loose, thick, and short. Surprisingly, it seemed to hold an edge ok for the abuse I put it thru, so I set it aside for a winter boredom project. That day arrived last week. It had a heavy coat of paint on the blade, which when sanded off produced some interesting patterns underneath. I made a crude scabbard from scrap ¼" plywood and a handle from ash from our trees.

It won't win any beauty contests, but it will get some use and live on. @phillstill need not worry.

Coworker came in, he got his stolen motorcycle back sometime since last Tuesday. He showed me pictures of it, what was once black and chrome is now blue and purple with a hint of silver here and there. The ignition is ripped out and there is a Milwaukee drill battery zipped tied to the side of it for power
