My shoulders are toast now, but my last compound I was able to use was a Bowtech Assassin at 50#.
Killed deer just fine and I miss hunting with it. Love that bow.:notsure:

Years ago that was the thing to do, crank em up high so you could get max arrow speed (and brag about how high your draw weight is); bows are so much more efficient now thats its kind of pointless to have a high draw weight.

I bought a used PSE Full Throttle about 4 years ago. It maxes at 60#'s, but 2 seasons back I lowered it to 50#'s Last year I had 50# limbs installed and custom strings & cables. It now max's out at 49#'s and shoots my hunting weight arrow at 302FPS. It put the smack down on the GA 9 point this season right at 30 yards.

The PSE Full Throttle is touted at the fastest bow made with an IBO of 370FPS (70/30). I figured if I started with the fastest bow made, turned it down to 50#, it would still shoot lights out and be fast, and it is!!

This reminded me of a morning about 35 years ago. Freezing cold November morning in Wisconsin and hunting with a 70# compound, A big heavy eight pointer walks right in front of me and I couldn’t get the bow drawn no matter how hard I tried. Funny how a guy remembers all the details on stuff like that. Shooting 53# now.

In my 20's I was obsessed with 3D archery. Wasn't too bad either. Won a couple of state IBO tournaments and placed top 15 at a Triple Crown in the fingers division. For a while I was shooting a weird ass bow with an hour glass looking cam right below the handle of the handle riser. I think it was a Jennings. Anyway, I was shooting that at #90 trying to help with yardage judgment. After the second time it came apart I sold it and went back down to #80. Now I shoot a Hoyt Double XL at 65.

Does anyone here remember the era of overdraws and the trail of the blown up bows left in their wake?

PSE, and 55lb draw weight here. I've only got a few seasons under my belt in archery, but it hasn't let me down yet. I appreciate the lower draw weight when you're standing there drawn back for 2-3 minutes waiting for a perfect shot opportunity that seems to never want to come. I'd only consider a higher draw weight if I had a much nicer bow with the type of letoff that you can nearly let go fully drawn back and it doesnt move. Mines not like that though lol. The letoff, or whatever the technical term is, is almost non-existent, so you feel the full weight the entire time you're full-draw.

70# PSE does just fine with both elk and whitetail...

First shot at 35yd full pass through right behind front shoulder, second shot at 52yd dropped him. IMO, its all about shot placement.....

There’s more to it out west than shot placement and bow poundage.

I’ve had a lot, like a LOT of stalks that have gone right. 70 lbs at 50 is typical out west. For every good stalk I’ve had, which again was a lot, I’ve had double, or triple the amount of stalks get blown.

There are legitimately no win stalks, where you have a few buck surrounded by 10-15 doe with the wind in their favor, in open country sage 500-600 ft up on a hill side.

Or standing on a bench at near 12,000 ft looking down 84 yards in a Colorado drainage at a bull just a hat away from blowing the stalk navigating shale rock…things aren’t always like 1 persons experience.

I have had Wyoming winds take my arrow at 70 yards. Things get different at those distances. With limited time; if you can’t get closer in an otherwise low success unit, then I’ve found that a heavier arrow going faster is a good way to over come a lot of these problems with difficult stalks.

Especially with a 28.5 draw length. I have a bowtech revolt x80. I’m shooting like a 450 gr arrow at 315 fps or something like that.

edit: Nobody “needs” 80 lbs it to hunt out west, but for me who has zero problems drawing it, it has no downside for the reasons mentioned above.
