I grew up helping my dad as a Plumber, and he did all the maintenance on our house as well, and eventually built his own house after retiring in the late 90's. I helped him re-roof our house and garage back in the early 80's. Those composite/asphalt shingles lasted for 25 - 30 years back then. Our damn house here in KY was build in 2006, and the f-ing roof (composite shingles) is already shot. It started leaking in early December when we had severe weather move through. The roofing contractors we called out to get estimates all told us that basically you are very lucky to get 15 years out of composite shingled these days. Insurance company denied our claim, so we are stuck having to wait until we someday build up enough equity to borrow against that to get the roof fixed.

And here I thought things were supposed to get better as new technologies come out......... :annoyed::frusty::rant:

I would say "Welcome to Marriage", but you've probably got a good many years of experience at this point. I'm on my third, and it never gets easy :bananadead::deadhorse:

My 2nd wife would get into a screaming rage at least once a week. She would chew me out something fierce, and then not even acknowledge my existence for 2-3 days. I lived in terror every moment of those 2-3 days. Sometimes she would throw things at me, or start hitting me. After 8 years of that nonsense, the final straw came one day when she got so mad, she told mem either I leave, or she would get a kitchen knife and stab me. I promptly grabbed my keys, wallet and walked out the door, got in my car, and drove from NY back to CA. Filed for divorce as soon as I made the 6 month residency requirement.

Current wife only yells at me maybe once a month, and she's calmed back down to normal usually within 5 - 10 minutes. Still sucks, but arguments are always going to happen.

I've found it best just to say nothing but continue whatever I was doing all along (reading, watching TV, etc) as soon as mine gets pissy.

I had no intentions of doing shingles anyway but I did find in the process that nowadays they last 15-20 as you said, IIRC they use less asphalt in the process because of cost and/or environmental reasons. My metal roof is stated to last 30 to 40 years. By way of comparison, $8K versus $11K for the job depending on shingles/metal is what I was quoted. Seems stupid to do that with a roof which is such a major project plus the potential for "downhill damage" as i call it that they make the materials less durable.

Mine gets moody at times and I pretty much let it go. To be fair life has kicked her ass the past 18 months (which means ours of course but you get the idea). She threw the checkbook across the room once and I refused to speak to her until she made amends..told her that's the last time I'll ever stand for that action. I did it long ago with an old girlfriend and won't again.

Though some years ago I got her good.she grabbed something from my hand (which she hates) and I said:

Me: You didn't have to grab that (politely)
    Her: WHat's your problem?
Me: Just what I said and I know you wouldn't like it
Her: (raised voice) I'm not talking to you
    Me:Okay sounds good
    Her: You're a jerk
Me: You're yelling, that's not talking in the first place.
Her: I'M NOT TALKING TO YOU
Me: Excellent, I could use the peace and quiet.
    Her: I hate you!
Me: You said 2 minutes ago you weren't talking to me. When are you going to start keeping that promise, because I'm sick of listening to your yapping mouth already
Her: I'm going to bed (stomps out of the room)
    Me: No kiss goodnight?
    Her: F>>> You!
    Me: Goodnight honey, love you!!

She needs to remember I am the king of not feeding into stupidity

We got 4 different bids to replace our entire roof.
    Local contractor #1 - composite shingles - $16,500
    Local contractor #2 - composite shingles - $23,000
    Local contractor #3 - composite shingles - $26,500

Now our place is 2 story, with I believe 14 changes in pitch, so a semi-complicated job. All these estimates include full removal of our existing roof, full take away of all debris, full cleanup, etc.

My wife saw an ad on FB for "metal roofing". I called them up. I forget their name, but they are a company based in Ohio, and they are actually a manufacturer of their own roofing materials - metal, composite, etc.. So we had them send out an estimator, because why not? Here I was thinking the common sheet metal style roofs. So they send a guy out. He has this whole suitcase full of sample materials, and spend a good hour explaining how their products are totally superior to anything else made by Owens-Corning, or anybody else. Their metal roofs are actually individual metal tiles that resemble clay or concrete tiles, not just simple sheeting. So after this massive demonstration of why theirs is the best stuff on the planet, he goes up on the roof and in the attic to take measurements, etc..

Now, before he gave us their official quote, he goes on to explain that their metal roof comes with a 50 year guarantee, their composite shingled have a 30 year guarantee. Both guarantees are fully transferrable to a new owner if we were to sell the house, and, during the guarantee period, ANY damage of any kind, they will come back out and do a complete repair, at NO cost.

Sounds too good to be true, right?? Now, as soon he pulled out his samples and started explaining how their product is so superior, I knew right away this was not going to be your typical home repairman giving you a quote situation. This is the ultimate car salesman trying to convince you to buy every single upgrade there is situation. So when he finally gave us the quotes for each type of roof, I literally just about shit myself.

    Metal tile roof - $200,000
    Composite shingles - $100,000.

Yes, those numbers are correct. one or two HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS for a fucking roof. On a single family home. Our reaction was obvious to him, so then he tries this "Well, you realize that if you went with another brand of composite shingles, installed by some local contractor, for a place like this, it's gonna run you $70,000 - $80,000, and you'll get no warranty with it". I never told him we already the above mentioned 3 estimates, so he obviously had either no idea, or was intentionally trying to bully/scare us into believing his sales pitch. I almost wanted to tell him "You realize that the average cost of homes in this part of KY is less than $100,000... and you seriously think someone would pay you that kind of money just for a roof??"

My wife and I still chuckle about that experience.

No, it was not a real fun marriage. This was just the tip of the iceberg. One time it got so bad, I literally called 911 and explained what was going on, and asked that a Sheriff Deputy be sent out to 'splain to her that domestic violence is not acceptable in modern society. They sent two Deputies out, they didn't arrest either of us, ,as neither of us had any actual injuries. A few years after that, I was undergoing a Federal background security clearance check for a job, and the Investigator asked me "So, what was up with that 911 domestic violence call you had in April 2011?" I laughed at first, as I'm sure he expected it was going to be the usual "man beating up a woman" scenario. I gave him the full explanation, and since there no arrest made, it ended up being a non-issue. And I was already divorced from her by the time I underwent the background check.

The one in the above story was built in 2006, it still has the original roof.
