Hi! I have owned Toyotas (22RE) since the 80's. But, this is my 1st Tacoma. I am looking for information regarding hard shifting in the 2013 models and any other info regarding the "best" or "worst" years for the 2nd Gen. Tacomas. Thanks!

    Best regards,
    Rob

My 07 has 243,000 miles on it. I replaced the alternator at 180,000. Other than normal stuff likes brakes, batteries, tires, etc. that's all. I just drive it. Still don't have to add oil between 10,000 mile oil changes.

I won't argue that the newer versions have more technology. But that's just more stuff to go wrong.

the worst years are initial buggy release year same as any car.

never heard of hard shifting. Supposedly Toyotas have a valve that can be turned in the auto trans to change it from softer slower shifting to faster and firmer

mines manual. Shifts like a manual.

sounds like you should do a transmission drain and fill, as its the only way to check your fluid.

    2013-2015 are the best years.
The hard shifting is normal. Even more so when the engine/Trans is cold.

It goes without say, You would benefit more from having a qualified shop do a PPI.
It's worth it. A couple hounded dollars is much cheaper than the multiple thousand you'd loose buying a lemon.

Us guy on the internet can only guide you. But you should hold our opinion very high. We really have no idea. We can see or drive the truck:thumbsup:

Like someone said you can have a shop PPI

or take it for a test drive solo. Go to a parking lot. Inspect it and scan for codes.

did this with an overpriced white one. It had hidden crash damage they didn’t disclose. Passed on it.

if the readiness monitors are set that is good. If they are not it means someone just cleared codes to hide them and they may not have popped back up yet.

OBD2 is usually a more shallow scan than dealer diagnostic. Never done one of those yet.

I scored a minty 2013 this summer, the previous owner was so anal he had the cabin air filter changed on a set schedule. Needless to say the transmission service had been done a couple times, as well as diffs and transfer case. It does tend to shift a bit hard (final into 5th) when it is cold. Once it warms up all is good. IMO 2013 is a great year, no funky electronic stuff other than the tiny backup cam in the mirror.

I hear you brother. It’s like my brain can’t figure out what to tell my eyes to look at.

Op, if it hasn’t been mentioned, frame rust can be a problem, more if your roads get salted.

Also OP our frame recall thing is 12 years only. My 2013 is due to be inspected before 2025, but the process takes awhile & you start a year in advance

2013 v6 here; I experience the occasional hard shift pre-warm up but nothing jarring. Had a transmission flush at 60k (thought maybe I could have been low on fluid prior) to no effect.

I will say that I had a TSB performed on a low rpm shuttering issue (5th gear @~45mph) and that solved it. Funny thing with that is that using a higher octane fuel seem to prevent this issue pre-TSB so who knows.

I give the 2013 two thumbs up.
