Hey everyone, question about front shocks, I have 5100s in the front currently and they are definitely an improvement over stock but really fall off at speed off road, when the shock has to travel further. I want to upgrade but I’m not quite sure what to go with. I should also add that I’m not really worried about on road performance as much as off road. I have a budget of about 1500 for the front suspension.

Here are some options I found:

    Icon 2.5 ifp
    Icon 2.5 remote res
    King 2.5 ifp
    Bilstien 6112

These are just some options that I’ve found from looking around.

I’m also aware that I need new upper arms to take advantage of the extra travel some of them offer, is this needed if I’m not going over 2.5 3” from stock height? Will I just be wasting my money if I’m not utilizing travel, I will eventually get new arms but is it okay to just have the coils for a 1-2 months?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

TRD Pro suspension fits the bill of what you are describing - is 2.5" lift height what you are looking for on the coilovers (2.5")? The TRD Pro Fox setup has 1" front lift, more travel than other OEM setups, and is designed for moving fast offroad since it uses monotube shocks that have better high speed compression and heat dissipation capabilities. I ran both stock TRD Pro (2020) setup and with 1.5" of front lift from the Wescott setup (so 2.5" total lift over stock non-Pro Tacoma) for 3 years and it worked great for my use similar to what you described. I ran the OEM UCAs and the shop that did the lift got the alignment set up with no problem for me.

I only did UCAs when I decided to replace with another setup (Fox 2.5" Performance Elites, basically the same type of setup but with adjustable compression, more travel, more lift, and remote reservoirs), but UCAs may make sense if you are doing a larger tire than 256/75R16 (or whatever the equivalent in 17" is) or you have more down travel than stock and need the UCAs to clear the coilovers.

That’s some good information thank you. What are the trd pro shocks exactly? I have a first gen Tacoma. I hear it’s fox?

They're a setup for 3rd gen trucks, I'd assume also work on a 2nd gen but not a 1st gen truck. Since this was in the 3rd gen section I assumed you had a 2016+
