I've shot at a lot of deer with a bow and a gun. I've actually hit some of them. That's why they call it hunting and not killing. I'll keep shooting :D

No echo chamber here. But I do know quite a few stone cold elk killers on Rokslide and Bowsite that are using sub 50lb recurves and longbows to successfully put elk on the ground. Are they shooting at 50 yards? No. 30 and under, yes. They choose their setups, pick their shots and punch their tags. Some in LE units, others in OTC.

I've shot cheap bows, expensive bows, low draw weight, high draw weights, cheap guns, expensive guns, small caliber & large caliber. I've learned through the years it doesn't matter what you shoot, it's where you hit em :D

True, but the equipment you choose can play a big part in you hitting what you are aiming at.

There’s some guys that are pretty good with it. I’m not taking that away. What I’m saying is you’ll have less shots to choose, which in turn, is less punching of tags.

I’m pretty good at stalking and playing the wind. Sometimes wind swirls. The thermal changes. Sometimes a twig snaps. Some times rocks make noise. Even in socks. Sometimes the earth is loose or you’re on shale rock. I’m telling you, more often than not, stalks into 50y or so won’t work out any closer. Or at all.

On one of my bow hunts in Colorado, I was crouched under some fir trees watching a salt lick, set out for cattle that used the area. The day prior I had glassed a few cow elk around it, so I decided to sit on it the next afternoon. With the wind in my face, I had a cow and calf come in and start licking the salt. A 5x5 with one of his antlers growing straight out of his skull, like a unicorn, came in to check her estrous. About 60 yards behind him was a nice 6x6 easing in as well.

So I had my sights on the 6x6 and was waiting for him to get within range. For some reason, that cow must have seen me move ever so slightly, getting into a shooting position and walked right over to me and started sniffing me at about 3 feet. It didn't take long for her to explode outta there, taking both bulls with her!

I could have shot that unicorn 5x5 at 20 yards, but dang sure wanted that nice 6x6!

One thing I've learned from hunting, that applies to all things in life, is every piece of gear is nothing more than a tool. A 80lb bow is a tool for a specific job when a 40lb bow might not cut it. A saddle/climbing sticks/climber are tools for a specific job if sitting on the ground just might not cut it. The list goes on. The point is, you can accomplish a job with any piece of gear/tool if you try hard enough. The biggest tool you've got is the one between your ears. Use what you're most confident with.

The takeaway here, you can kill a deer with a 40lb bow on the ground wearing blue jeans, if the tool between your ears is good enough. If its not, you can use a 80lb bow and hide in Sitka o_O:anonymous: KIDDING.... just keeping the convo going:cheers:

Years ago I was hunting these strip mines where I had to drive a long ways in on a really rough gravel road to a turnaround where I would park. One day coming in I see something next to the road. It's a fake deer with a sign next to it that says "do not shoot". Being a little early I parked and sat there a little while. Pretty soon a van drives up and a guy gets out, walks over to the deer, pulls the sign up and walks back to his truck. He then proceeds to open up the side of the van and take out more gear than I would have ever dreamed one person could carry. He's then walks up the hill behind us dragging all his gear with him and gets in a blind I hadn't seen. So there he is, hunting 20 yards off the parking area. Granted not very many people drove all the way back there, but still it occurred to me the last thing that guy wanted to do is actually shoot a deer. I'm sure he enjoyed showing all his friends his vast supply of gear, and taking it out and playing with it. Actually killing a deer was probably the furthest thing from his mind.

Some people would rather take a recurve and put themselves in a position where they have to sneak up to within 30 yards of an elk, and if they can't and they go the season without getting one that's okay. To other people the goal of hunting is to actually kill something, and they're going to choose the gear that gives them the best chance to do that. I'm not sure either hunter is right or wrong.
