We did our first highway ride yesterday, about 150 miles round trip. I need to adjust the pressures because I think Discount Tire set them to 39; they were at 44 after warming up and tended to wander a bit. They do push a bit harder than the Firestone’s but happy so far.

What’s available depends on size. For the size you are looking at, they don’t offer XL or C.

Just off the top of my head XL is offered on 265/65R17 and C is offered on 265/70R17, 255/75R17 and a few others. Those are just examples and not everything.

Does XL feature thicker sidewalls? Looking at 265/65r17 wheels and tires now. TY

The only real difference between XL and SL is that it can go to a slightly higher pressure to carry more load. I believe it maxes out at 40 psi instead of 35 psi. There might be a slightly stronger sidewall to make that happen, I’m not sure. They are still ultimately in the “4 ply” category though.

I had the 265/65R17 XLs for a while and they were nice. Very lightweight and great traction. E’s will be stiff. XLs will have the milder sidewall since they are a slightly extra-strengthened SL.

    IMG_7307.jpg

If you’re going 17’s, 265/70R17 C (356940) would be a good option for strength, the aggressive sidewall, same overall diameter as 265/75R16, and C rated so not harsh. Will have the lesser traction like the E, but it’s not terrible. Just slightly less street worthy than the SL/XL tread because it has a taller heavier duty tread.

Just pulled the trigger on a set of Toyo AT3 265/70r17 (C load for the more aggressive sidewall, and they were only 1lb heavier than the standards!). By far the lightest tire I could find, from the ones I was interested in. The Falkens are much heavier, the K02's are heavier, the Nitto Grapplers are heavier.

Upgrading my steelies from my SR tacoma to a set of MEthod 703's in matte black. I'll post up some pictures when they're all mounted and installed. Should be a huge change. Im gonna have to sit and figure out the math on the weight, but I assume my new wheels are gonna be lighter than the steelies. Shouldn't weigh down my 2.7L engine too badly with 40lbs per tire on these.

Well, had to go to E load. Tire Rack said the back order ETA from Toyo for the C load in 265/70 is over 90 days. Just spent the extra for E load. Probably worth it in the long run for the durability. Also, am I wrong or does Toyo’s product page show the E load at 48lbs and C load at 50lbs per tire?? Tire rack shows the C load at 40lbs but the actual spec sheet shows 50lbs per tire, so the E loads are actually lighter, maybe it wasn’t such a bad $70 upgrade after all.

I ended up ordering 35x1250 in C load. My open country mt is 78lbs. On paper the new C is 59lbs. We’ll see.

I called Toyo to confirm, since tire rack shows a different weight. They did confirm that the LT versions all have the same aggressive sidewall, C or E. The Toyo rep also said for my SR Tacoma I should be right around 38psi for front and rears. She said they gave 3 different designs, the very large tires or “Floating” have their own sidewall appearance, the SL and XL/P rated have the less aggressive sidewall and the LT (C/E loads) will have the same sidewall. For anyone wondering

she also confirmed the C load are 50lbs per tire and E loads are in fact lighter at 48lbs per tire. 265/70r17

Tire Rack's 40 lbs definitely seems wrong, it would be difficult for an LT tire of that size to be that light. I also believe the E weight on Toyo's site is wrong because my skinnier 255/75R17 C's are 49 lbs. The 265/70 E's are probably more like 55 lbs if I had to guess. The 50 lbs they show for C load is likely correct. Wonder why the C's are backordered so bad. Those are the tires I eventually probably want, but I'm a ways out from needing them.

That is mostly correct, except there are some Japan made LTs that end up with the less aggressive sidewall randomly. I don't remember which ones. My LT255/75R17 C's are from Japan and have the more aggressive sidewall.

My 30x9.5R15 high flotation tires on my Jeep have a very mild sidewall despite being an LT type tire.

I still don't believe the spec on 265/70 E weight until someone weighs them. 48 lbs is extremely low and it makes no sense that a stiffer and higher capacity rated tire could come in weighing less than it's C load equivalent. I think they're just reading you the website.

    I called Toyo.

    E loads in 265/70r17 are 48lbs each
C loads in the same size are 50lb each, she said the C are made in the USA and are a heavier rubber compound resulting in a higher weight. The E loads are made in Japan, but both have the same sidewall since they’re both LT

I’ll post pics when they get mounted we’ll see

I believe you called Toyo, but I don't believe Toyo telling you the E's are lighter than the C's is correct.

I have C's from Japan that are on track to be as heavy as the 50 lb C's you were looking at that come from the USA.

It doesn't really matter, I've never felt much of a difference in tire weight anyways. I just don't want an overly stiff ride, which is why I don't do E's.

Yeah, the weight is so minor even if it’s a few lb difference, don’t really care. The Toyo still seem to be one of the lightest compared to BFG, Falken, and others I looked at.
I gotta figure out what the stock steel wheel weight was, my new Methods are about 27-28lbs per wheel. I have the 2.7L so it is a small concern, but I do live in a rural area and go down a lot of gravel and dirt roads, E load should last a little longer if anything.
