How do I get involved with this? I dont have a scanner but I have plenty of uses for scans.

You can be involved by waiting for one of us to bite the bullet and shell out some cash for a new electronic laser dohickey lol

We could start dumping personal files for parts that we've made, but I think the goal is to start with fresh, raw scans. So we're SOL until those start appearing.

And anybody that already has them either doesn't know we are interested, or isn't interested in sharing. I can't say I blame them, the vendors lurking in here will definitely use ours if they don't already have them.

I'm relatively certain that 0 dollars will be made for making these models from scans, except by people making little widgets, bumpers, and other things related to money.

Which is the point, I believe... :notsure:

Using scans sent to me, I learned a lot about the current offerings of free tools.

I took this scan of the RR engine compartment, cleaned and trimmed it, then used the geometry to create a test fit gauge to see if it's accurate.

And yes, yes it really is!

Blame the very slight misalignment on the flimsy gauge I printed. I was rushing to get something on the printer before I went to sleep.

More to follow when I'm at a computer rather than a phone.

That's promising! Do you have any info about the setup used?

The scan was made with this, which is perhaps on the lower end of the scale both in price and expectations:

    https://www.creality.com/products/creality-cr-scan-lizard-3d-scanner

I used MeshLab initially to do all of the cleanup and trimming. It's a very powerful tool and I barely scratched the surface of what it can do.

After cleaning it up and trimming it, I ended up with something like this:

    upload_2024-1-24_20-20-10.png

And then quite a bit more trimming away what I didn't care about for now. Solidworks wasn't dealing well with the massive meshes but smaller subsets it was okay with.

    upload_2024-1-24_20-22-3.png

Then I brought this into another tool I stumbled across called "Instant Meshes". This provided a very automated way to generate a simplified and more geometric surface mesh.

    upload_2024-1-24_20-25-46.png

This is the mesh I then imported into Solidworks, created a few planes based on the geometry, and started throwing together a gauge build off the geometry.

    upload_2024-1-24_20-30-26.png

Then to verify the geometry, I 3D printed the gauge and it fit beautifully the first time! This proves that I can now use the geometry to create other things as well.

disclaimer: I know nothing about modeling but thought this might be helpful

Maybe I’m way off, but couldn’t you use an app on the iPhone pro or iPad Pro with the lidar sensor? I’m pretty sure they showed this off in one of the keynotes when they first added it. It’s probably not as good as a dedicated scanner but if you’ve already got the device, might be worth checking out. I’ve only used the measure app and it has shocked me how accurate it is

maybe something like one of these? I’m sure there’s lots of others, this was just the first I found

I'm attaching two files for the gauge I printed:

    1. Exported STEP file from the solid model I made in Solidworks

    2. STL file of the same

Because I verified the fit, these can now be used for others to model their own creations off of.

Send me a "scan" of the same area using your phone and I can overlay it with the other one to see how it compares.

I scanned this, then @Juisebocks cleaned it up. @Juisebocks, what is the final file size? Did you simplify the textures at all?

@tcBob Here is one hosted on thingiverse.com. One possible thing we could do is to host externally. Any ideas on how this could be linked and organized best?

Here is a scan I did a about a year and a half ago. This one is hosted externally. It's a 54MB obj file, and the license is creative commons so anyone can use, share, or build upon it for free. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5444586

I didn't clean that... I haven't recieved anything yet lol

Maybe organize it like Rock Auto has their parts organized. Github is good for us nerds, normies may need "click here" links.

Can we host files here just like images? I don't know how that works

That was me that did the cleanup.

I can put the modified file back on here later, but for a better scan I'd suggest concentrating on getting the details of each of the six mounting points in great detail from every angle. I don't know how this works with the size of the scanner and it's focal range.

It's pretty easy to get rid of unwanted stuff but much harder to add or reconstruct poorly scanned details.

I actually picked up a revopoint range last year and plan to do more scanning this year. I really like the idea of sharing the files for these trucks.

This was me just testing the scanner out. Completely raw scan with no post processing

The first pic doesn't have any scans in it. That's just my suspension design of a tacoma frame file.

Where did you get the frame model? Which generation? Is it dimensionally accurate?
