Rear shock Install. Help. What am I doing wrong?

Maybe something like this.

 

Strap worked like a charm you bunch of geniuses. Now the problem is the bushing on either side is so large it wont decompress to the level of the eye. When I jacked up the rear end it just compresses the shock lol

 

If you have some silicone paste or any lube hell even dish soap pop it out and lube it up and pop it in again?

 

Gonna have to trim that bushing.

 

I'll try to apply a thinner cylinder to the eye to see if it will line up. Will keep your posted. Thanks again

 

Absolute insanity boys. 2 screw drivers, mallet and an allen wrench later I managed to align the eyelets. The bushing on the medial aspect of the bracket was bulging through by a lot honestly. Used a dremel burr to cut the excess. I have no idea why fox's 2.5 bushing are so large for this application. Compared to my previous 2.0.Looks like theyre twice the size on each side. Anyways end in sight. thanks for all the help again.

I am skinny, yes I don't know shit about trucks, yes I get nervous af crawling under my truck on jack stands bench pressing some tiny knob. My goal is to get in way over my head then come here for help. Everything I do to my truck I do it myself. That's how I learn, hopefully I'll pass that on so my daughter is not as useless as me.

I'm aware of the bottom bushing being much wider (like you experienced) on the 4Runner rear shocks compared to the Tacoma's; people often buy 4Runner shocks to put on their Tacoma or vice versa.

You got the correct shock right?

Question. Any harm in leaving the other side with the 2.0 for a few days?

 

If you not wheeling, no worries. Tackle it later.

 

No harm, but just replace it while you're there.

 

For what it's worth, I installed the Fox 2.5 PES a couple years ago now. Believe I was one of the first to get them. Ran into the same issue with bushing rubber being too large and had to shave off a small layer with a razor for them to fit (even after spreading the shock mount apart with a brass drift to make it wider and lubing the hell out of them, just wouldn't fit otherwise and always rolled up the rubber). My leafs were able to fully droop out making it easier to line up because when they were brand new there was no way to force the shock shaft upwards with any amount of force.

Good luck getting the other side mounted up, OP. Give 'er hell, you'll get there.

 

I would get the other side done while you have the tools out there already under there and it’s on jackstands.

 

you already got it but i was going to say jack the opposite side under the shock and it should have pushed the side you are working on down.

 

Just a safety tip for when working on jack stands, I always slide my tires under the truck, if they are off, just in case something goes wrong.

 

Good to know, I'll be doing a bit more prep on the other side before tackling that. As for the shock shaft, when a few said it was easy I knew that was bullshit at least for these (custom tuned) 2.5s. 163 pounds of my body weight barely moved the shaft. The ratcheting strap worked like a dream though.

I always have the jack and 2 stands bearing weight, but this is an excellent idea. Appreciate it.

 

I have the same ones and had the same issue with the bushing being tight. Accutune confirmed Fox makes them larger like that. A rubber mallet got it in place but a little lube could help slide it in. I don’t remember having the problem with the length though.

 

where was this post a couple weeks ago struggled to install my kings and ran into the same problem I used a 4x4 on top of my Jack and lifted the cab secured it with Jack stands and rear tires just in case. I was full droop at that point and I was able to get the shock in but I had to file down the mounting points so that rear shock could slide in, used a screwdriver to align it to the hole and success.
