5.7 and 4.6 I've mostly heard of seeping cam towers, not too much of timing covers

Lexus has the job quoted at almost 23 hours and a cost of 5300

Yup 4.6 V8 so hopefully not the same issues the 3.5 has. I’m at 108k miles too so not insanely low miles to have some issues coming up.

Wow, 23 hours?! When I just did my timing chain/balance shaft chain in my 2.7 4 cylinder, the book time said 20 hours, but they want you to pull the motor out of the truck, which is nuts!

Yeah, that should be the number of hours they can bill to someone (either a customer or warranty). Though warranty work is usually given less hours, because the manufacturer doesn't want to pay.

Not too bad of a job, just quite a bit of time. I did it over 2 days; the 1st day had the motor torn down, replaced the chains and all of the guides/tensioners/gears that went with them, and put the timing cover back on with the valve cover. The 2nd day was reassembling everything else on the front of the motor.

I am glad I had my coworker help with replacing the chains (20+ year mechanic), but helping/seeing how it was done, I think I could take it on myself again. Which is what I have to unfortunately do since I fixed my original noise (balance shaft chain was worn excessively, and ate into the guides, and sounded like a bad timing chain), but after getting everything back together, the truck whines like it has a supercharger :frusty:. I hope it has something to do with the balance shafts, as I bought LCE's delete kit to get rid of them.

My tundra has a whine. I still gotta pull the belt and check pulleys but mine sounds like pump cavitation from the power steering lol.

Did you have to drop the oil pan to get the timing cover off?

Unfortunately, after the job was done, I took the belt off, and the noise was/is still there. I was hoping it was the power steering pump, since I had to re-route the return line, and drained/filled the reservoir.

Thankfully, no, the upper and lower oil pan can stay in place.

The one who dies with the most stuff wins.
It depends if they have to pull the whole engine out like they do on the 3.6. If they do, some dealers are billing close to $5k for the repair. But my dealer was around $3K. The smarter techs know they can remove the front differential and jack up the engine and do the repair that way and it saves a considerable amount of time. I will say if mine wasn't covered under warranty and I had to pay for the repair myself I would probably have tried to live with the leak as it was a very slow one.

Yep, you're forced into the annoying rock ledge or loading dock at the top and I wouldn't try either without a sufficiently built rig
