Id feel better about keeping a 1st gen Tacoma, than a 3rd gen. Too many electronics too go wrong.

 

One of the main things to go wrong would be the shortening of my life… wife may kill me if I trade in. Not simply because of the ridiculous prices and interest rates, but she’s due for next vehicle and wants the next gen 4Runner. She’s still riding around in a ‘09 Trailblazer… but that damn straight 6 is like bulletproof. Keep oil in it and it just keeps going strong!

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new dual sport motorcycle. I was considering a KTM Enduro 690r. But after much research I'm now strongly leaning towards the "Dinosaur", a Honda XR650L. No electronics, simple & reliable.

Funny enough, I got a Tacoma because it was the simplest “modern” truck I could find. I got rid of my Ram 1500 because the electronics were apparently far beyond what the company was capable of manufacturing at the time.

Everything electronic would go haywire on a regular basis. It got to the point where the doors wouldn’t lock and windshield wipers weren’t reliable. And it had less than 60K miles on it when I traded it in.

 

KLR fits into that mold - simple, old-tech.

 

Those Honda xr650r’s were beasts! My old boss had one he used to let us rip the farm on… more power than any tail could handle and a wheelie monster. Yet, tame enough put around town on. I vote Honda!

Ah, on second thought… Dave, you’re a big guy. I still vote Honda, but a CR500R. Just get a bolt-on road kit from Motorsport.com and throw a tag on it. Think they are “historic” tag-able at this point… no inspection necessary.

 

Not a bad plan.
Much easier to diagnose and fix if they break too.

That’s pretty crazy. I like some new tech stuff but when it goes haywire, it can be tough to fix. Windshield wipers and door locks shouldn’t be in that category though

Yeah that truck had a lot of problems and i maintained it flawlessly. I ignored most stuff until the door locks stopped working. Of course the dealership “couldn’t replicate the problem” so I was like okay then I’m selling it back to you since there’s “nothing wrong with it” lol

 

I agree but they look more like a adventure bike. I like that the XR650L is a XR600r dirtbike chassis, has that dirtbike look. More ground clearance and 40lbs lighter than the KLR. And my honda dirtbikes, atvs & my honda sxs have always served me well and never left me stranded. I've been riding Hondas offroad since I was 8yo. I started on a 1969 QA50 honda minibike that my dad bought used.

 

I had 3 cr500's. I sold my last one, my low hour 2001 in 2016. Yea I'm regretting that day.

Honda gets my vote! Every off-road toy that I ever owned was a Honda, never once did I ever have any troubles with them while in the middle of freeking nowhere in the SoCal desert or the deep forests of the PNW.

 

Woah. I’m sure that was fun to work with. Is there a max time where you have to dump or it ruins the truck?
