This was 15 years ago now, but when I worked for Staples, the rule was just to use the counterfeit detector pen on them, but I think some better fakes come up fine with those pens.

Yup, I get around $1000/year in cash back rewards. I keep an emergency $50 in my wallet but other than that I almost never use cash.

My fiancee uses cash more because she has a restaurant job some nights. But the owner has started having credit card tips added to their paychecks instead of pulled out at the end of the night as cash because he says the IRS is cracking down on tip income more.

Cool! Ever been to the north woods? I'm surprised how many Mainers have never been north of Bangor. And hell, how many have never been north of Portland :|

The Secret Service will confiscate counterfeit bills, but will not reimburse you. If you give them the details of when and where you got the bill they will want to talk to the manager at Home Depot, but that probably won't help get your money back either.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
What's even more f-ed up is if (I'll use Jason as an example but it could happen to anyone using cash) Jason got a fake bill say from a gas station and used it at Home Depot, they could call the cops and have him arrested for passing along counterfeit money! But yet in this case HD isn't responsible? That's some fucked up shit!

Has anyone ever heard of parabolic springs? I just stumbled across something for it yesterday and began wondering if that might be better in my specific application (mostly mall crawling)

He would have some explaining to do, that's for sure. IIRC, whoever discovers a counterfeit bill is supposed to seize it and notify he Secret Service. On a guess that mostly happens at banks. No matter who discovers it, they have to forfeit it and get no compensation. Otherwise it would be profitable to print fake bills and turn them in for a reward.

The term cobra effect was coined by economist Horst Siebert based on an anecdotal occurrence in India during British rule.[2][3] The British government, concerned about the number of venomous cobras in Delhi, offered a bounty for every dead cobra. Initially, this was a successful strategy; large numbers of snakes were killed for the reward. Eventually, however, enterprising people began to breed cobras for the income. When the government became aware of this, the reward program was scrapped. When cobra breeders set their now-worthless snakes free, the wild cobra population further increased.[4] This story is often cited as an example of Goodhart's Law or Campbell's Law.[5]

I think of the cobras whenever that comes up. I think Jason could have refused the bill from HD and they would have had to make him whole with another bill/etc, but he'd have to carry around a way to test the bill for being counterfeit. Goes back to why I use my credit card(s) for just about everything. Plus, same as Joe, I get about a grand/year in cashback or travel rewards at least.

All the repairs are done on the truck. Have been for a week. It's been sitting at a dealer waiting on a fucking alignment. For a WEEK. And they aren't returning calls or emails from my collision guy.

I've been pretty patient with all this, supremely understanding of the limited service providers up here and the fact that it's accident season, but come on, enough is enough. I know damn well that B2B/insurance alignment job is sitting there while they shovel more lucrative work through.

I'm tempted to just go get it, tell the rental company where I left the rental, and schedule an alignment myself.

my 2017 taco had the front passenger side repaired, first time I picked it up, the wheel barring was shot, had to convince them to replace that. Then months down the road, I realize something with the alignment is not right, after days of fighting, they then can not find the paperwork showing the alignment. I was told, my paperwork must have been misplaced, they did the alignment then.

needless to say, just another reason I don’t trust businesses to work on my stuff.

I do everything I can myself, and my collision guy is on point - he just doesn't have an alignment machine. It was also easier to go through my collision guy for insurance purposes, since if there are more issues found it's a hell of a lot easier to have them file a supplement than doing it myself.

I had to replace my tie rods on my F250 and had the same issue, I couldn't get an alignment scheduled. I ended up doing it in my driveway, got it 'close enough' to where it would drive decent enough and waited for my appointment a couple weeks out.

I can do most everything in my driveway other than tires, balance, and alignment. Fortunately there are 3 places within an easy (<1 mile) bike ride from work, I can drop it off in the morning and then get it whenever. But anything else, I'll do it myself.

Guy who was in NMW with us last year in an xterra did it by tape once, brought it to the shop and the whole thing was green by laser. Part skill, part luck.

I've never had issues w/ getting into a shop for an alignment level task, but I'm also in Providence and, see above, I have 3 shops just in my neighborhood, let alone if I can get further out, too.

That's awesome, I was way off! And, I only messed with tie rods so, conceivably, I really should have only had to get the toe set correctly. I don't know if I would have tried it if I had to set caster and camber. I bolted a 2x2 angle to each hub and then used a metal tape to measure the toe. Pretty unscientific, but it got me back on the road and it did drive and handle just fine.
