a deer reacts differently when crossing the road... the worse i've witnessed was a young buck attempting to jump over a honda civic and never made it... extensive hood and windshield damage... the deer spun like a toy top a few times on the car... legs flailing... stumbled to its feet and vanished in the woods... i was following right behind in my truck so it could have been me...

Bummer, dude. I've never hit a deer, but I did have a coyote deliberately jump in front of me back in the day when I used to commute through Malibu Canyon on my way to work in Santa Monica every day, so I can somewhat relate. Nothing like removing chunks of fur from your grille at lunch time to put your day in perspective.

    We have Suicide Squirrels here!
The deer got a headache. Probably not much more.

I’m not sure of the laws in Louisiana, but you might have had some free venison if you had stopped. Also, you might have legally been required to report a deer death to the DNR.

Well, I'll let you decide. I was driving down the road leading into the canyon at about 60mph in my '92 Eclipse GS when I spotted the coyote about 100 yds ahead up on an embankment off to the left side of the road. It then swiveled its head towards me, looked me right in the eye, and timed its jump to land just in front of my car as I was zooming by. Broke one of my fog lights, bent my front license plate frame, and left little chunks of fur all over the grille.

It didn't survive. And there was no faulty ACME hardware in the vicinity as far as I could ascertain. :rimshot:

Leave the hairs in place until insurance has looked at the vehicle. Evidence of animal strike is important to ensure damage is repaired under comprehensive coverage rather than collision coverage.

never hit an animal just an 8 year old kid who rode his bike across a 4 lane road at dusk in October. I did swerve across the road into oncoming traffic. Luckily I didnt encounter oncoming traffic and had witnesses and a good lawyer. The kid lived

Crazy how often this happens with the deer over population in my area. Driving back from rhode island on Christmas night on route 95 4 deer just sitting in the breakdown lane just waiting to ruin someone's Christmas night at 6pm. Gave them a long honk and they just stood there.

Years back, a deer careened down the side of my son's 10 year old Camry that used to be his mom's car. It broke the mirror and dented both doors. When my son asked me if we were going to get the damage repaired, I responded "learn to love it son". :)

That damage is clearly from hitting an animal. Leaving the hairs in place is not necessary.

Just finished a round of golf at an employee outing while in College. Literally had two beers and was just rolling home doing @50. I thought I killed him, laying on his stomach head facing up, blood ,luckily he was vocal. It looked a lot worse than it was. If I hadn't taken swift action and swerved into oncoming lane I would have run him over. Instead he bounced off my fender and hit the windshield and landed. Cop did thank me for taking quick action. I was working part time at a big $$ Country club in college and had the help of a shark attorney, when the ungrateful parents tried to sue the shit out of me for their sons stupidity trying to cross a busy street at dusk. Walked in the house and the news was on, the traffic report about the accident and the road closure. I nervously laughed when I explained the news to my parents, that it was me hitting a kid on a bike.

In Chaddsford PA I witnessed a deer smash through the driver's side window of a Bronco in the opposing lane of Rt 1. Later found out the deer broke the drivers neck

Oof, I've dodged so many deer the last few years I'm amazed they don't have doe season at this point. People who say don't swerve, well it depends. I've saved my truck 3-4 times easily but I know how to drive and it was the right place to do it safely.

My insurance company is Progressive. As soon at I got to work yesterday, I took a bunch of pictures of the truck and filed a claim on-line. They get you to upload pictures of the vehicle. I called later yesterday to check on the claim. I told them that a deer had run out of the woods as I was driving by and it hit the side of my truck. They asked of it was drivable and I said yes. Their next questions was, which body shop do you want to drop it off to? It was a super easy claim. They did tell me to download their app for the claim. I had to take more pictures and a video of the damage and upload it to the claims part of their app. The adjuster will get those pictures and video to get the estimate started.
