5k in repairs?

That’s what bugged me the most I didn’t even see the mechanics face. All done through a service advisor who couldn’t even answer what could have caused this was it my oversized tires? Like cmon you want me to drop 5grand but can’t even properly explain this to me. I walked.

 

Under 39K miles, there shouldn't be any wear or play at all. I assumed at that point it could be a faulty o-ring or something. As other said though, I would just leave it alone still......

 

Lots of seals and clamps will get a “dusting”. Almost every seal in my truck looks like that or worse.
Much worse.
Then if one gets suckered into doing the seals, sometimes, it’s worse than before.
You are so far from needing something it’s not funny.
I was in this dealership business a looooooong time.
The things they were asking techs to do and what techs were doing next to me is criminal.
I had my ass in the office so many times because my numbers were low it was comical.
Most new techs have no empathy and will take every dime from an old lady if they could.
I wish I had the answer to this crap but until they drop the flat rate upsell incentive, it will never change.

Yes, agreed. A trusted mechanic or independent shop can be worth their weight in gold.

 

The local independent shop I brought my Tacoma to for an oil change (which was at market price) wanted $500.00 to replace the rear shocks. Apparently they think that they are worth their weight in gold.

 

My daughter (30 yrs old now) found an independent shop in Pittsburgh 4-5 years ago that has treated her GREAT. Especially with her Wrangler - he never did anything unnecessary and would always explain everything needed first before proceeding. Very fair pricing, too. Her hubby takes his Wrangler there, too. She got a new Subaru Forester last year and is going back to the dealer for oil change/state inspection in March. Told her to NOT LET THEM do anything else unless it is FREE (in writing).....get a list of "needs done" then call Rocky or Bruno (I always forget his name) or whoever the independent guy is!!

 

they are just doing their job, you got a free inspection and now you know what to keep an eye on, just drive it......

Throw that estimate in the trash, put another 100K on it then think about some of those repairs.

 

With seeing that estimate, I'd have to step outside and make sure I didn't buy a Chevy?

 

I don’t understand why people so often get bent out of shape when mechanics point out potential problems. They are simply giving you info. It’s up to you how you want to react to it. You can always ask for more information and/or deny the work.

Personally, I’ve repaired a leak unless the seal was blown away or I was disassembling the part for some other reason.

 

its not the potential problem it’s $3500 in labor . I think you’ll agree that’s high and with 37k on the truck… really

Different schools of thought on this. But I tend to avoid the dealer completely unless it's a warranty or recall issue. If it's a major repair, I look at specialty shops with great reviews and feedback from others who have used them.

Bought a Fiat Spider 2 weeks ago with 12,000 miles on it. A week after purchase, water pump started to leak. Dealer quoted $2300 for repair, billed at 7.5 hours of labor. Took it to a highly recommended shop and they did the work, including timing belt and tensioner for $1100, booked at 4.25 hours of labor. Both using OEM Fiat parts.

Just another example of why I stay away from dealers for any service or repairs.

 

One had to remember these super fancy als LARGE footprint dealerships have a huge amount of over head. This is what drives their hourly rates, it’s just the way it is.

 

Rack is fine.
I think auto parts stores replace wipers for free if you buy them at the store.
Trans does look like it’s weeping, but I don’t even think the seal is more than $10 and 20 minutes of work.
Rear shocks are even easier and can probably find stock take offs for very cheap or free (if yours are actually bad)

No idea for the Tacoma as I never needed to install a such kit. I had a friend do the same type of repair kit from Toyota on his 2021 Tundra and said it stopped the seepage. He said he installed the seals while it was on the truck.


That being said, no one here including myself can give a correct diagnosis and root cause by pictures alone. Best to find a dependable mechanic to build a relationship with outside a dealership that you can trust if you don’t do your own work.

 

Generally dealers get a higher labor rate from Toyota/manufacturers…If in dealer`s view this is a warrantee issue then the dealer is dicking Toyota. You have the extended warrantee or drivetrain is warranted for quite some time. Just clean the areas you have concerns about and check them periodically to see if there is really a problem then address them well before the warrantee expires
