2nd gen ABS Module

My beloved 2nd Gen Tacoma came up with a Brake and ABS light on my way home from work.
I scanned the codes and got:
C0200 Front speed sensor RH circuit.
C0205 Front speed sensor LH circuit.
C0210 Rear speed sensor RH circuit

3/4 sensors?
Well, they were all new OEM sensors back in April.

The fronts might have been bad wheel bearings. To save a few $$$ during THAT project, I bought NAPAs top shelf aftermarket wheel bearings (I do not have the special pulled to remove the hubs from the unit bearings). The intention was to run them about 2-3 years and then swap out with all new OEM Unit Bearings, hubs, studs, etc. So I automatically assumed those were bad, and the ABS tone rings had chewed up the front sensors. But I know better than to act simply on assumptions.

To start, I jacked the front of the truck up and put it on jack stands. I checked the wheel bearings for any play. None noted, no noise when I rotated the wheels/tires.

Then, I pulled the front wheels off to check the ABS wires for any damage. -None based on visual inspection.
I removed and checked the front ABS Sensors for abrasions or debris (if the wheel bearings are bad, and chewing up the ends of the sensors) - Those Look fine.

then I checked the front ABS sensors resistance. Both are the same ~320 kOhms on each of them. - Per the FSM, this test is fine.

Checked Ref voltage at the sensor connectors:
Right Front: 12v -good.
Left Front: .04 mV -Bad

OK, I am getting some where.

I repeat the process with the rear sensors.
-Resistance: Both sensors the same, ~320 kOhms each.

Checked Ref voltage at the sensor connectors
Right Rear: 0 Volts -bad
Left Rear: 12volts -good.

Interesting that the bad voltage is on the opposite sides of the truck.

I disconnected the ABS module connector and tested continuity from the right and left front ABS sensor connectors. Resistance is less than 1 ohm and showing continuity.

Looks like the ABS module is bad.
PN is 44510-04070
and discontinued by Toyota (!!!!!!!!!!)
No dealer in the US seems to have one.
I am unable to get one through partsouq.

I have found a few on EBAY or on Car-part.com but after checking the pictures, the ABS module isn't the right one.

I am trying to figure out what my options are.

I'd consider just removing the ABS module, pulling the ABS fuses and the truck no longer has ABS however, I understand that the Speedo gets the speed signal from the ABS module, so that might not be an option. This signal is important for operation of Cruise Control.

Has anybody had any luck repairing the ABS module?

I am completely slayed that such an important part, for an extremely popular truck is no longer available new from Toyota.

 

Did you check them for shorts to ground?

Seems like an odd part number, are you sure its correct? It's likely been superseded a few times.

I've been able to order accumulators for 03 4runners and 05 Sequoias so its odd you cant find one for your tacoma.

 

The part number is on the ABS controller, and it's what I see when I look it up at partsouq and a few other Toyota web sites.

Usually supersession part numbers are listed on the parts supplier page, but I have not seen any supersession numbers.

There is another PN on the unit:
89541-04040

I did some poking around and came up with
44050-04110

And that might fit. I'll need to have it checked via the VIN on Monday.

 

44510-04070 is not a service part, it's a "component" part that is not sold separately.

44050-04070 is the correct part. 44050-04110 is for a 2009, so wouldn't work on a 2008. 44050-04070 may still be available (albeit with a backorder), you'll likely need to connect with a dealer to check.

If you do ultimately determine the ABS module to be the problem (check shorts to ground for sure), you'll either need to repair or replace it with a used/reman part.

Update: I took it to the *gulps* dealership for diagnosis.

My braided SS air line had worn into the wiring for the ABS sensor wiring and was grounding out the signal but was also why I had good continuity. I should have checked the resistance of the wires to ground.

Anyway glad you got it fixed and didn't need a module.
